What is it like living in seattle? -

I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and want to move to the west coast. I have never visited but am interested in moving to Seattle (or the suburbs of Seattle). I am planning on visiting this upcoming summer, but would like to start my research now. I am hoping that someone can tell me what it s like to live there and what the best places are to live, what the school districts are like, and what areas are the best to work in. I am a Nurse and would like to know what the best area hospitals are. thank you for your time!!!

I would live in the suburbs. It is cheapest to live outside of king county (the county of seattle) I think the schools are generally good and safe. I wouldnt live in Seattle or Tacoma though. I have lived in Puyallup my whole life (well Las Vegas one year) and it is a great little town and the schools here are great and safe, i think i saw one fight my entire life and it was the kids who think they are gangsters but are nowhere near that lol. Usually the summers are really nice here, doesnt really rain at all but doesnt get too hot (usually 80-ish). In the winter it depends on the year...this year it has been pretty wet. The sky is usually pretty gray all throughout winter. We get some snow every year but not too much to annoy you. You can go to the mountains (about an hour drive) to get to great skiing or other winter sports. We have lakes for fishing/water sports. Ocean beaches (about 2-3 hours away) or you can just go to the puget sound to fish in salt water. There are a lot of things outdoors here. I couldnt live anywhere else :) For hospitals, i know that harbor view usually gets the most trauma patients but we have a lot of great ones you can work at around here as well.

Boring, unpleasant, boring, boring, dismal, cold, isolated, and boring. So crushingly boring.I worked at Virginia Mason, they re a great hospital and they are hiring, but it s a dumb idea.

Seattle is wonderful. It is not AS rainy as some people THINK it is. In the winter/fall it s pretty chilly. But in the summer it is BEAUTIFUL!

rainy.sparkley vampire clans that kill eachother a few miles north, killing sprees.its lovely.highest suicide rate in the nation

fantastic if you don t mind rain

The general population in Sea are : junkies, mentally ill, and homeless. And for that reason I will NEVER buy a home here, I would prefer to rent and leave whenever I want.It s a beautiful city but not that different from anywhere else.It s tough being a new resident...basically they assume you re either a bum or crazy. So you have to separate yourself from the natives here.In my opinion some are working class or accomplished but you cant help but notice, strife and sadness whenever you go in Seattle or the entire state for that matter. As I said most ppl here are in transition and have been so for a long time.It was easy for me to establish residency here because I m progressive with my life. But because of all the problems here.Employers, Realtors (renters) give you a VERY tough time.It s a harsh life for some ppl here, ppl are challenged, either by their own negligence or just being left on the streets. I don t see much attempt by the ppl here to assist their own. They kick their ppl down and walk all over them. And act like their no crime or problems here, but ignoring it wont make it go away.So be prepared to work for what you have and create a stable life, or else....

Does it ever rain in Southern California? -

just wondering...

Seems it never rains in Southern California. Albert Hammond, 1973When I lived there, I noticed the hills would turn green in January and be brown again by the end of May. Also, Southern California invented snowmaking; before that, you had to dash up there right after a good snowfall if you were going to do any skiing. On the other hand, the worst rainstorm I ve ever experienced was in LA. It was storming so bad, I couldn t see where I was driving; I just had to follow the red tail lights ahead of me, and hoped they knew what they were doing. I didn t pull over because I couldn t see the side of the freeway, and was afraid I d hit a wall or another car.So yes, it does rain in Southern California - just not enough to quell the fire storms they get every summer.

Yep, on average about 1 day a month, just not this year---LOL...(I don t know who the guy is who does these averages, it seems like less than that).....and when it rains, it pours, and the ground can t absorb it fast enough, leading to flash floods, mud slides and a concrete river full of crap...(Mother Nature s way of cleaning the homeless out of the river basin)....

Tony Toni Tone is somewhat correct when he said It never rains in California. Very rarely. We only had ONE nasty storm in October and that was it!

Not often but when it does rain, it pours, man it pours Listen to the song.

Southern California gets an average of 10-15 days of rain a year.

it was raining like last month here in Los Angelesand it ll probably rain in January too

Up until the day it rained in October I don t think it had rained here for like 10 months... mainly rains from like October to March for a few days... that s about it...

yes but not often. it rains on average a total of 2 weeks a year.

Does it ever rain? Yeah. But not often.

Not much, and thats bad cause theres a pretty bad drought here

not lately

yes it does but pretty rarely because its in the south

Im leaving lagos, nigeria and stopping in paris for a 10 hour layover before boarding back to go atlanta? -

do i have to recheck in my luggage??????

I would call the airline directly, to be sure. I seem to think, with a ten hour layover, you would have to claim your luggage and re-check it, but I could be wrong. It would be a drag to have to go through customs twice -- but then again, in re-checking, at least you know your bag at least got to Paris, and will conceivably go on to Atlanta....That s going to be one long day for you! Have a safe trip.

No. They will do it for you as long as its an actual layover. If you booked a flight from Nigeria to Paris and a separate flight from Paris to Atlanta, then yes, you would have to recheck your luggage. However, if you booked a flight from Nigerial to Atlanta (with a 10 hour stop in Paris), then no, you will not have to recheck your luggage.

Applying for ut austin? -

i have an associate degree in science from a community college . how do i go about applying for chemical engineer at ut austin. in case i get admitted, am i going for 2 years or 4 years? please help

go the website and click on prospective students, where you should find a link to apply. I m pretty sure UT does all their applications online now. You ll probably want information for transfer students since you have a degree already, but if you have any questions, you can ask them at the site too.As far as how long you ll have to go.. i would guess at least two years, maybe more. It depends on how many of your classes will transfer into your degree plan and how many other courses you ll need to take.

If I was in your position I would ask the people at UT instead of asking people on Yahoo Answers.Things might change since they thought they knew the answer.Good luck. UT is a great school.........Cheers.

There are so many adult shows in vegas. which one is best? looking for classy, fun, unique and ofcourse hot.? -

shows like holly maddisons peepshow etc ... there are so many , hard to select ...

The Three best vegas adult shows are....Jubilee - is still wowing audiences and winning awards year after year. Jubilee! is a classic Las Vegas production C in fact, its the last authentic showgirl revue in the city.Zumanity - a provocative and cabaret-style production with a Cirque du Soleil twistPeepshow - Aubrey O Day and Holly Madison Star in Vegas Hottest New Show!

I recommend Zumanity or Jubilee. Here are video clips of the shows and discount tickets.http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/las-vegas

ZUMANITY!!!

They are for both genders. I would suggest Zumanity cirque.

X-burlesque is my favorite.

I would go for Crazy Horse Paris at MGM or Zumanity at NYNY

Is Charleston, South Carolina a dangerous place? -

Like what are the day-to-day crimes happening over there? Is it more of a ghetto place or a trailer parks?

I don t think there s any sort of ghetto/trailer park vibe in Charleston. Maybe in North Charleston, but that s actually an entirely different town in an entirely different county.During the day, I would say it s very safe. There are occasional incidents during the day, but it s not that bad. The place is always crawling with tourists, so anyone up to no good would have a hard time getting away with anything.I live downtown and I will say, it s not the smartest thing to go wandering around at night, particularly alone. Even on the Battery and by the Water Front Park, there is drug-related crime and violence, an occasional hold-up, an occasional rape, an occasional mugging, and an occasional murder. The Market area is especially well-patrolled by the Charleston police, but it s not smart to push your luck. There are a few sketchy areas, as there are in every city, but for the most part, I would say Charleston is very safe between the hours of 7AM and Midnight.

Actually it s no worse than any other city. I must say, the emergency services are among the best I ve ever dealt with. Where you ve gotten the idea that Charleston is nothing but trailer parks and ghettos, I have no idea. Is the state of Maine the ideal place to live? -

I m fishing for the ideal place to live.I hate living in high densely populated states like CA,FL,TX,among others.Maine has a low population and most of the state is forest,How awesome!living around nature and away from the hustle and bustle of big cities and certain class of people sounds the ideal place.no offense,I ve never been people s person preferring to live in harmony and close with nature.

choose up-state new york. you should live somewhere in the adirondack park. it is huge, with very little population, and a lot of forrests.

Nope too cold for me. Arizona sounds like a much nicer place to live

I NEED You People Close to LA, CA to HELP ME!!? -

I have been looking at Culver City, and want to know what life is like there. Or someplace closer to LA.Just tell me anything you know about Culver city or any other close places to LA. I have been reading some other questions like this and a lot of people from California seem to be pretty pessimistic about the state. I know it s expensive. I know that jobs are scarce and hard to come by. I know that the dream of being an actress is cliche and many never even achieve it. But for me, I don t think I d ever forgive myself if I didn t try. Since I was a little kid I ve been a ham for the stage and for the camera. And since I was a kid I wanted to try to make it but I didn t have one of those supportive families. Now I m 23 and getting older every day. I don t live in the land of opportunity here in Kansas City, MO. In fact it s like the land of NO opportunity in this field. There are acting schools and agencies both which I auditioned for and got into. I got my brother s girlfriend to take me to a John Robert Powers audition for the school. I got in. I knew ahead of time I wouldn t be able to pay for it but I liked auditioning. I later was signed with an agency after auditioning with them but they were retarded I found out and yet somehow one of the biggest agencies in KC. I want to give myself a year at least in LA. Maybe two. I do have a skill. I went to hair school. I m not sure how much cosmetologists make there but I would secure a job before I moved. I would also have the money to move back home before I moved. I guess, I don t know what I m asking. For your opinion maybe?

I moved from Nebraska to LA and went to college and have been here ever since. If you do it right, it s certainly possible to make a living. Right now, rents are dropping because so many people are moving out of the city due to our high unemployment rate. To be a cosmetologist, you have to assist for about a year but then you could get your own station and build your own clientele. In terms of Culver City, my sister lives there. It s been really revitalized, has a great downtown area now with wine bars and restaurants and shopping and they re currently building a train that will go from there to different parts of the city to bring people into the area. It s getting progressively better. For a while, it was a little sketchy but with the high end restaurants and the Fox Hills Mall renovation, the area is improving. It s true that everything is more expensive in L.A. from food to car insurance to rent to everything else. For a while I worked three jobs while I was trying to get school debt paid off and be able to just live. But if you re willing to make that sacrifice-- and if you re from the midwest and have the midwest work ethic-- you can do it. And it will all pay off in a few years.

You said you can t afford John Robert Powers. What about the Colleges in or near Kansas City? I know some of them have performing arts programs. You could get grants or loans if you have no money. And you must have some money saved or you wouldn t be considering moving to California. What acting have you already done? You don t mention any. Kansas City has many opportunities to become involved in theatre productions. If you haven t already taken the opportunity to study acting and do some performing I think you should stay where you are and try that first.

Coming to LA to pursue your dream as an actor ? It s a stupid idea. And I can say that because I live here, and see the consequences of the thousands of young people with the same idea, all because they had to pursue their dream . Trouble is, 99.99% of them come here unprepared, unrealistic, with no money, no experience, no skills, and no plan. You seem to be under the fantasy/delusion that you can just show up in Hollywood and be discovered . That s a myth. A fantasy. NEVER happens. EVER.Want to know how people get discovered ? It doesn t just happen overnight:1. Go as much experience as you can. That means practice, practice, practice, every day. Most people don t have the discipline to be any good. And this also means that you sign up for every singing workshop, musical theater production, and drama/singing camp that you can find.2. Next, you need contacts. By doing step 1, you ll start to get contacts. You need them in this town. Because the way you get a contract is when someone in the music or movie business hears about you. And they aren t going to sit in every karaoke bar in Hollywood to find you. (It s too painful, much like the opening rounds of American Idol).3. You need an agent. Because your agent will have your demo, your head shot, and he/she s the one with contacts in this industry. Your agent is the one that gets the casting calls. Your agent can set up the gigs in the really high profile places.4. You need money. Money to stay in LA while all this is going on. Money for workshops, camps, and classes while you improve your craft. Let s do the math, shall we?Unless you have mad skills and a killer resume, you ll make minimum wage, which is currently $8 per hour. If you are lucky enough to get 40 hours per week, that s 320 per week, or $1280 gross per month. And that s BEFORE taxes. Take home is probably $910. Now it s a hard economic fact that you should spend around 1/3 of your salary on rent or mortgage. One third of $910 is about $300, which is what you can afford. However, the average rent for a studio/bachelor/single apartment is about $1000, and a 1BR is about $1200. In order to afford that, you need to make at least $3000 per month. Looks like you re a little short.Expecting to come to LA and be discovered is unrealistic. Feel free to come visit and enjoy the sights. But generally takes months to make the right contacts so that you can get in on an open mic night or an audition. You know what happens to people like you from the midwest when they come out here? Many come here on the bus, with high hopes, some pocket money, no plan, and are doomed to failure. The Grayhound Bus depot downtown is the pimp and perv capital of the universe. Every day, newbies are helped by these people. They will give you a free place to stay, offer you some food, usually some pot or drugs, and all is well at first. Then you find out how free all that stuff is. They have you in their house, you have nowhere else to go, and that s how many wannabe actors wind up as sex slaves. Somehow you never earn quite enough to pay your pimp, let alone enough to strike out on your own. Your pimp holds all your money for you. They just busted up a ring out in the valley, where dozens were freed from virtual slavery. And frankly, those were the lucky ones. Too many wind up in the clutches of some sicko, lured by the promise of a free place to stay. Some get their 15 seconds of fame, on the 6:00 news. They re the ones covered up under the white sheet. If you wanted help, you got the best advice anyone can give you at this point. What you choose to do with it is up to you.Frankly, I don t care what you think of me. I m not posting this answer for points, or to be popular. But once you ve seen another wannabe actor strung out on drugs, or a dead one, this type of post becomes a public service message. Seeing one is enough, and I ve seen too d@mn many. This isn t Kansas, and it sure as heck isn t Oz. Stay home, Dorothy.

Moving to the USA?..? -

hi,I live in Canada right now and I m in grade 11. I want to go to California for college but I know it will be very expensive if i go just right after i finish high school in Canada. So I was wondering about the rules / regulations / processes that I d have to know about if my mom and I moved to the U.S.A so I can finish my last year of high school in the USA so that college in California will be cheaper. (that s what I ve heard at least) . Anyways if we do move to the USA, it would be sometime this summer. I will be 17 but since my mom doesn t really want to move to the USA, I told her she can move back to Canada after I turn 18 ( feb. 2011). I want to know what stuff we would have to go through so that I can live there pernamently and my mom can live there temporary. I also want to know if it s possible for me to just move by myself to the states this upcoming summer. Here are the things I want to know specifically - What paperwork needs to be done for my mom and I to live in the USA? (I will be there pernamently and my mom will be there temporary) and also how long it will all take- Can I live alone in the USA at age 17 and a half if my parents are supporting me financially in another country?-Will college in California be cheaper if I lived in the USA for a year? I d appreciate any answers to these questions. Thank you

I would suggest putting this in Immigration as they are experts on this kind of thing.
