Would A Taxi Driver In America Actually Offer To Lose A Guy Like In Films? -

I have been to America many times but only in a cab twice and i never thought to ask. Thanks

Actually, I own a taxi company and the answer is no from any real cab driver. A fare that is probably going to be less than a hundred bucks isn t worth a 200 dollar ticket or losing their hack license over. That and follow that cab are Hollywood inventions.

For a price, yes.

Hotel rooms - smoking + partying? -

1) If you rent a Hotel room - non-smoking and you end up smoking in it, do they charge you extra for the smell? 2) If you leave 4 cases of beer leftover in the Hotel room, will they charge extra for the trash???

As others have said smoking in a non-smoking hotel room will cost you.If you plan on having a party in the room let the hotel know. They can help you out with ice tubs for your beer and direct guests to your room. They can also provide extra trash baskets for trash and room clean up. Leaving beer in the room is not a problem, they will find some way to get rid of it [staff party, toss it, etc.]. It is a nice touch to leave a tip for housekeeping when you party in a room because it is going to take them longer to clean your room and thus the housekeeeper may actually lose money because he/she can t get as much work done. If you seriously trash the room they are within their rights to charge you a cleaning fee.Hotels rooms should be treated like you are in someone s home. Hotels don t want their rooms ruined just like you wouldn t want your home ruined. Remember to keep the noise to a tolerable level. If the hotel has to warn you about noise more than once or twice they are within their rights to ask you to leave if your noise level is bothering other guests.

It depends on the hotel policy. But if it is a non-smoking room and you smoke you will have to pay the cleaning bill to get the smoke out of your room it s usually around $250 a room to get the smoke out. If you leave trash or beer you should be fine. As long as the room is not destroyed ie(things broken).

Only about 13% of adults in California smoke. Hotel operators cater mostly to the other 87% of the population who don t their rooms fouled by smokers so you will really get slammed. A lot of hotels here are 100% smoke free. Hooray. The housekeeper will probably take your beer home and consider it a tip.

If you want to smoke, find a hotel that allows smoking and avoid the $250 fine. Partying is dumb. What you really need is one good woman to spend the evening with, not a bunch of fat, loud and obnoxious men who just want to yell and drink your beer for free (and then vomit on your carpet).

Im travelling to new york alone and scared!? -

hi everyone, im a 25 yr old female from brisbane and in 3 weeks i depart on a US holiday. im going to be with a contiki tour group for 99% of the trip, but i do have 3 days prior to the start of the tour in NYC alone! im freaking out being in such a big, busy place by myself. anyone got any tips? i already figure i wont go out at night(unfortunately). thanks heaps for ur help.also what is must-see/must-do in NY apart from the obvious liberty island, central park etc...also what denominations of money are quarters(25c i suppose) nickels and dimes??ta much:)

Hello! NYC is a wonderful city! I ve lived here 20 yrs and I love it!I do understand your apprehension, since most folks only know the Apple from what they see in the news and movies, but it is not any different from any large city! As far as safety is concerned, simply exercise the same practice you d use in any busy urban area, such as Sydney and Melbourne. Now to your next question, what to do in the city... What isn t in New York would be a shorter list!In Queens you ve got things like the Botanical gardens, the Museum of Science, Museum of the moving image. In Brooklyn, there s the Brooklyn Zoo, Museum of Art, the boardwalk and more... Staten Island and the Bronx have many things to do and places to visit and of course Manhattan has more things to do than I could begin to list! Our money is simple enough, the paper denominations you ll most likely handle are: $1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. Coin denominations are: Pennies (1 cent)Nickels (5 cents)Dimes (10 cents) Quarters (25 cents)You might get the occasional $1 coin.Once you arrive, I think you ll find this city much friendlier than you might have expected! I d be happy to have an email correspondence to answer more specific questions!

I m from the UK and I feel safer in NY than I do here. It s a lovely place. The first time I visited I thought it was going to be scarey like the movies and was so pleasantly suprised. Just be careful as you would at home and don t go wandering off into any unsuitable areas. I felt quite safe at night in the touristy areas - it s mostly tourists. The shops will be fully decorated for Christmas so you need to do some serious shopping. Enjoy the hussle and bussle of NY, you will be fine.

Try the bus tours, they are fun.Try one of these companies..http://www.citysightsny.comhttp://www.newyorksightseeing.com/

New York is among the safest of America s large cities and crimes against tourists are taken VERY seriously. The most likely crime that you could fall victim to is buying counterfeit or defective goods. Stay away from designer goods sold by people who can t spell Gucci.America s monetary system is 100% metric so you will not have to deal with peculiar denominations such as shillings, ha pennies, tuppence, crowns or sovereigns as I did when I visited Ireland during the early 70 s just as they were transitioning from one monetary system to another. Please take a look at some of the links below for things to do in New York:http://www.associatedcontent.com/articlehttp://www.associatedcontent.com/articlehttp://www.associatedcontent.com/articlehttp://www.associatedcontent.com/articlehttp://www.associatedcontent.com/articleYou will have a wonderful time.

Would nt worry.A little common sense willl get you by.Its nothing like the movies ..good or bad.Would not miss an evening outWould get onto the net before you arrive use the hotel resources for places to go things to see.NYC is easy to get around if you take it in small bites.Might just find a small club or cafe in or near your hotel.Always recommend the smaller cafes restaurants the street food from the carts. Not an official visit unless you have a NY hot dog, a big hot NY pretzelMoney is the easy part.About the only thing that is base ten.Quarters are 25 cents= 1/4 dollar, Dimes are 10 cents = 1/10 dollar , nickels are 5 cents = 1/20 dollar.Being a young lady , treat yourself to a trip to Tiffany s , a famous fancy jewelry storethat has some affordable things for regular people .Would not miss the museums , most are near Central Park,..The Guggenheim Metropolitan museums of art the Museum of Natural History Planetarium.all great for rainy days.Short cab or bus rides will take you to anything that might interest you.Would ask locals your age where they go to relax ,dine or shop.If you will have free time away from the group ( it s not on the tour) would head downtown to Chinatown, Little Italy, Greenwich Village.Parts are a little touristy but a little hole in the wall cafe is a good place to be on a cold night.Best regards

How much will it cost to get a taxi from JFK Airport to New York City (Central Park Area) ? -

I m going to be spending new year 2010 in New York City with my girlfriend, and i m booking it up now as a birthday present for her! (It costs a lot, to come over from England at that time of year).Been looking at packages, and the prices are very expensive, so just working out how much it would cost to book it all seperately..Also if possible.. does anyone know any good but affordable accommodation within or around New York City?ThanksSam

Yellow taxi cabs cost you flat rate of $45 between JFK and anywhere in Manhattan.http://www.nycvisit.com has list of hotels that list from inexpensive to expensive.Use Google Map to locate the address of hotel. Most hotels around Central Park are expensive.

Presently the taxi rate is a flat $45 per car, not per person. Add a tip onthat andtolls if you request the quickest rate. there are other less expensive alternatives, but they require shlepping your luggage on the subway. You could look for a hotel in Suunyside or Astoria,or Long island City. These are quenns neighborhoods that are closde to Manhattan but not nearly as expensive.Incidentally, the Times Square scene is not everything that it is cracked up to be. You have to arrive several hours early and there is no Alcohol allowed. An alternative to that may be to reserve a place at a restaurant near the event like TGI Fridays or Olive Garden. There you will be a little more comfortable in an indoors setting that has bathrooms, too. Outside there are none, and if you leave the area you are not allowed back in.I am not trying to keep you away, just warning you a little about what you will find.

Assuming you re going to the 59th Street, which is the southern end of the park, the cab fare is a flat $45.50 plus toll. You can avoid the toll by tell in driver to the 59th Street Bridge, which is free, instead of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. If your hotel is located north of Midtown, Manhattan (for example the Upper West Side), the fare will vary by the meter.Another way to get from JFK to Central Park area will be by public transport. You can take the Airtrain, which is an automated train, from the airport to Jamaica Station, where you can then transfer to the New York City subway (underground) to Manhattan. If you opting on landing at Newark-Liberty International, you can take the NJ Transit commuter train from there to Penn Station, where a connection can be made to the subway. In regards to hotel, depending on your budget, may I recommend the link below.http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-19150198I hope this information is very helpful.Good luck

A fortune. Do this instead. Take the air train into Jamaica. Take the LIRR from there into Penn Station. Take the Subway uptown. or if you come into Laguardia instead, take the M60 bus into Harlem and take the subway downtown. The cab will be around $50.00 with the tip and you better leave a 15% tip in New York or else. Trust me on that.

I agree with Mary above. I visited NYC from the UK in June. Take the Air Train and Long Island Rail Road to Penn. It will cost less than 10 bucks and you wont get stuck in traffic jams. The Herald Square Hotel is very good. It s in midtown and a couple of blocks from Penn Station. 19 W 31st street. Very clean, modern and well maintained. Very close to Macys and shopping areas. Try booking through expedia or directly with the hotel. Also try www.booking.com.

sk bB4 u get in ... then ask another compare ... Take the underground ... A real eye opener .. NOT as bad as all that ... Be street wise... ie no BLING on display. I travelled Newark to downtown to get a Grayhound bus was very safe like the London underground ... don t take too many chances and it will be fine.

Your best bet is to find a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city, one that offers shuttle service into the port authority.

Three oranges.

Where can I find an inexpensive simple, little (1BR/Studio) Beach getaway at the beach of LA? -

I am looking to stay there for 1 week.

Inexpensive and beach ........not doable. There used to be, but they tore them down and built high rise condos .. more money for the space.I read Jennifer Anniston rents a house on the beach for 37,000 per month. This is who youre up against. But you ll have to go further up the beach towards Orange County.Try looking on http://www.travelocity.com Search for Santa Monica Venice Manhattan Beach Huntington Beach ( altho youre getting into Orange County now) LA is a very pricy place. 2nd only to NYC. Here are some hostels Heaven only knows what kind of people live there. I shudder to think. http://www.hostels.com/findabed.php?Sear

Try Fantasyland. Tell them Walt sent you.We see this every day in this forum: Everyone who wants to visit here is looking for cheap/affordable and safe . However, such a place just doesnt exist; the two terms are mutually exclusive. It s all about supply and demand: If it s in SoCal, then it s not going to be cheap to begin with. If it s a safe area, then it s more expensive. Want to stay near the beach? Expect to pay a premium. If you want something like that, try vacationrentals.com or vrbo.com.

In Manhattan Beach, for example, it will run in the neighborhood of $2000+ per week. That s using zip code 90266 as a housing base.http://www.marineviewmanagement.com/rent

Where is this beach of LA you speak of?Maybe you re looking for a hostel? I know they have them in Hermosa Beach.FYI: Inexpensive and close to the beach are mutually exclusive.

Nowhere. Even that costs a lot of money.
