It doesn t matter how long Coleman Young has been dead, he s still the primary reason Detroit has transformed from a Great city into a decaying ruin. It was the Detroit government which turned away incoming business since there was already the auto business and no more was needed. It was Coleman Young that kept racial animosity alive as a base for his power.Even Kwame Kilpatrick was losing steam against Freeman until Kwame revived the Us vs Them campaign theme, even though the Them have long since left Detroit. Finally, Kwame s downfall was due to fostering the Gangsta mentality, which might be charismatic, but not at all productive for a city.Detroit was one of the Great Cities of the US, and could be again, except for two things. One is a stubborn adherence to a dream of the old days which have long since passed (50 years ago), and a current dream of revenge and entitlement for the remnants of inhabitants, a dream fostered by the enabling government in Lansing. If Detroit were considered to be a drug addict, Lansing would be considered the pusher.
The voters of Detroit who keep electing these idiots to office are responsible. how in the hell did kilpatric ever get into office as well as reelected. When the voters vote for responsible people the city will start to return to the great city it once was. Electing Dave Bing was a great start now back him up with some responsible city council members and see what happins.
I don t really see this as a travel question, but to quickly recap some reasons:1-After WW2, the suburbs were growing and the big 3 and their suppliers build more plants outside the city center. 2-GM bought up all the electric train/streetcar makers to end mass transport in many cities and sell gas buses and cars.3-US auto makers never took seriously Japanese imports, then the energy crisis of the 1970 s occurred and they were scrambling for more fuel efficient cars. They failed to innovate, as thus their suppliers failed to innovate.4- As the population of Detroit fell, the tax dollars left. Education, city services, and other areas suffered. 5-After 9/11, the big 3 bet the farm on SUVs and other gas guzzler cars.
There is not one thing or person that caused the down fall of Detroit. It has been a slow death spiral tied to the decline of our region s manufacturing based economy. As Michigan has one of the country s most unfriendly business climate (from labor cost and tax perspective), it will take a long time to turn it around.
the race riots started white flight and everythings been downhill sincemichigan needs to reinvent itself as a leader in technology, everything thus has been been industrial and that sort of work has fallen off as we don t consume products in the same ways, we need sustainable thinking to move detroit forward, green architecture and creative ideas.
well detroit at its height in the 50s was the 3rd largest city in country after new york and chicago but lots of factors made detroit fall from grace 1) decline of the auto industry detroit had become a global powerhouse during the first half of the century but as japan became solid Competition along with the big 3 deciding to open plants in other areas then detroit made for lots of ppl losing jobs2) drugs durin the 60s when detroit started declining heroin and other drugs spread through the streets like a wildfire then the 80s came and so did crack with drugs bein profitable crime went way up as a result3) corrupt government from the ex mayor using the city credit card to buy personal cars and clothes to him costing the city 8 million via a lawsuit to all the city council, and board of education members caught participating in shady deals4) no jobs as i said detroit was so dependent on the auto industry once that fell so did the economy lots of ppl lost jobs became homeless or crazy turning to a life of crime in order to survive as with how it is now a city with so much drugs, unemployment is always going to equal high crime ratesbut on a good note southwest detroit mexicantown area is the only part of the city where population is growing and businesses are flourishing
A FACT ABOUT DETROIT COLEMAN YOUNG DIDN T START THE down fall of this city. the get even with this city began with JOHN ENG LER the REPUBLICAN. GOVERNMENT, for 12 years,it started with the taking of our school by that republican govern our school was not in debt at that time when the state took them when we got control of them back the state had destroy the money FOR OUR SCHOOLS they took the THE MIL-AGE IN ( 1997) DENNIS ARCHER ,KW AME KIL PATRICK, THE PRESIDENT OF THE TEACHER UNION these are just few names that has push this city where it is today. when COLEMAN was mayor we had lots of tax paying BUSINESSES, and lots of small businesses here are few TARGET, K-MARTS,FARMER JACKS, HOME DEPORTS, THE RENAISSANCE CENTER DOWN TOWN THE NEW CENTER AREA beside the BIG( 3) that is just a few, before DENNIS ARCHER COLEMAN was still the mayor (3) casino WAS PASS BY THE VOTES he didn t live to see them open TO IGUANA please STOP HATE ON A MAN WHO HAS BEEN DEAD FOR OVER 10 YEARS it is not his fault that folk move. AS FAR AS THE BUSINESSES MOVING out it started before COLEMAN took office but that another story it wasn t by accident that what is happening in DETROIT is happening
The corrupt Democrats who run the city. The citizens who vote for them, and by doing so, give them the power they have. Many people in Detroit also seem not to care about their city, unfortunately.Detroit is a beautiful city though, full of character. It has a soul, that makes it a special place. In the past it used to be a jewel of corporate America (JCA) - start calling it this way: Detroit the JCA, and use this acronym with your friends and acquaintances. Once Detroiters believe in their city and its potential again, things might finally change for the best : )

Coleman Young, he fostered animosity towards the suburbs, at a time when he should have embraced them, making Detroit more of a region than the king of the hill.
Crooked politicians, racism and, NAFTA are your primary causes. Everything else that contributed to the decay of Detroit easily falls underneath one of the three issues I stated.
Its called : General Motors and Ford! Put forth a good product and people will buy it! If not, the economy will sink....henceforth, Detroit!
1 - Poor educational system. The lack of education led to corrupt leadership who fosters ignorance to keep their pockets lined. Crabs in a barrel mentality.
you re responsible!
