I need some advice for my future. I currently live in New Zealand, you know down under , that little country next to Australia? Im about to go to my final year in highschool, yes its my final year, its scary! After highschool i want to work full time just to save enough money for college and expences when i move to the US (maybe) for my first few months.I dont want to go to any universities here in NZ, mainly because Ive been living here my whole life and im sick of it. I really want to move and live in LA and maybe go to UCLA. I want to try new things, but i also dont want to destroy myself in the process. Btw im not counting on my parents to pay for college, so it will all be on me! And their also not 100% behind this (0%), but they dont understand that this is what i want to do. So from planning to expences it will just be me. They might help in the future but now their not yet convinced, they will be when im actually in LA proving that i did it. For now im having fun on my summer vacation then next year im going to focus on my final year and get as much as i can (im not that smart but i am college material). And in 2011 who knows? advice?
If you plan to study in the United States your first step is to consult the nearest U.S. Embassy about the requirements for a student visa. You will need money, lots and lots of money because with a student visa you CANNOT legally work in the U.S. , and once your studies are completed you will have to return to New Zealand. The college costs for an international student are astronomical. Even if you can get a student visa, California is virtually broke, and the college systems have taken a huge financial hit. You may not be able to get in even if you wanted to.To legally work here you would need a work visa and currently the ONLY fields that will qualify are in Advanced Medicine or Engineering. Trades people aren t even considered.
Your chances of getting an extended stay in the US is slim to none.... But it never hurts to try. Any reason you desire to live in Los angeles? remember It s not like you see in the movies or television.. also we have a high rate of unemployment 13 ~ 22% + there are few cities far better than los angeles or california for that matter, to live. Cali isn t all chocolate covered multi flavored ice cream. A good portion is more like a carton of lumpy milk.
If you re not that smart how were planning on qualifying to get into a school like UCLA?
Adrian, you can get tons of FREE info from the US Consulate/Embassy and online directly from numerous UCLA websites....You do not have to pay ANYTHING for this information, though a number of websites will try and sell it to you....total rip off...Start hunting around now for scholarships...there are tons of them, not having to do necessarily with academics....like scholarships for New Zealanders who are female, live on a sea coast, speak Mauri as a second language and are interested in studying sharks, and all sorts of crazy stuff...Check scholarships for females, cause women live longer and end up with all the money that s given away for crazy *** scholarships...If you dig you will find one for yourself...KEEP DIGGING....You will be amazed....
Advice? Stay in NZ. Let s see, did your plans include starving? Living on the streets? Being a victim of crime? Most people who ask this question are unprepared, unrealistic, with no money, no experience, no skills, (no visa), and no plan.If you are outside the United States, you will need a visa. The nice folks in the immigration forum can help you with that.Next, you need a plan: First item on the agenda is rent. A decent 1BR apartment in LA currently goes for $1200, give or take. Nicer areas and areas closer to the beach are much higher. Don t expect to move to Santa Monica and get an apartment on the beach for that much. Or Toluca Lake, or Beverly Hills. Next, you will need a car. Los Angeles is VERY spread out, and train service is extremely limited. If you don t have a car, you will have to take a bus, which takes 3 times longer to get anywhere than a car. All told, it generally takes about $3,000 per month to live here. If you don t have a job that pays that much or skills that can get you that kind of job, stay where you are. If you are unskilled and work for minimum wage (or for tips like bartending or waiting tables), you ll only make about $1200 per month. And speaking of jobs, they are rather hard to come by now. College grads seeking employment are having a very tough time of it right now, since the job market is flooded with experienced people who were laid off. Unemployment is over 12% right now. Not exactly the kind of job market you want to move into. Finally, you will need money. Landlords want first month s rent and a security deposit up front. You ll need money for food, transportation, utilities, etc. The consensus in this forum is that you need about $7500 to start out. $10,000 if you are outside the US.So there s your plan. And please don t tell us that you have dreams of being an actor or singer. That sets off another alarm. We already have a million (literally) wannabe actors in this town. Dont even get me started.Moving here after high school is a really bad idea. You have no skills (other than wiping your bum, and there s no career options for that), so you basically can t afford to live here. Sorry, but that s the financial reality.
