*_~ So glad that you re considering San Francisco for your vacation.Try to stay in Union Square. http://www.unionsquareshop.com/ When you arrive at the airport, take the SFO air train that goes around the airport, then youll get off when you see Bart, take Bart to Powell Station (should be about $6-9 and it takes 20 mins ) thats Union Square. http://www.bart.gov/ for schedule..I just love the weather and the diverse culture here!! Traffic can be hectic but still bearable. Public transport is great! You can always take Bart, ferries, bus, taxi or cable car etc. However, if you dont have much time or want to travel beyond the city C I think a car would help a lot. Yes, you have to pay for parking, but save you time to go more places faster.. Try the City Sightseeing Open Top Bus Tour which is about $30. This unique open-topped bus tour of San Francisco includes four different routes, the Downtown Loop, the Golden Gate Loop, the Park Loop, and the Night Loop. You re free to hop on and off as often as you want on the downtown loop.Embarcadero is wicked nice, and it s not THAT far, so you could really just walk down it to the Ferry Building. http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/ On Saturdays they do a nice farmer s market and you can get lots of good stuff. Walk down to Pier 39.GET THE San Franciso POPOUT Maps I loves these POPOUT map- you get to see where you are- =) No Thinking required, especially on vacation. Gotta go with SanFranGal s recommendation; Scoma s is a must for seafood. Try BiRite Creamery for the best ice cream on the planet, seriously, go to 3692 18th Street -n- Dolores(near Delores). There s plenty to check out near Somas(Pier 47) ie: Fishermans wharf, Pier 39, and a scubed WWII Submarine, the USS Pampanito, located at Pier 45. You can go just about anywhere in SF and see something interesting. And if nothing seems to interest you, try running naked through the Haight or Castro district, and be your own SF point of interest.Have fun (and a ice cream for me too.)

Hi there. Too bad you only have one day...what to do....what to do!Well last weekend I just ate at Scoma s - awesome seafood! They are at Pier 47 on Al Scoma way. Here s their website: http://www.scomas.com/Sight seeing places: Drive across the bridge, you might be able to get tickets to Alcatraz (check with http://www.AlcatrazCruises.com), visit Pier 39 tourist shops and sea lions, go to Ghiradelli and watch chocolate being made and get a hot fugdge sundae, cable car ride to downtown and visit Union Square and go shopping, go to Baker Beach and get a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge, go to Sausalito - street parking is free this month, go to Muir Woods. So much to do...so little time!Have fun!-Patti

A Gray Line tour from Fisherman s Wharf is interesting. You can probably get a ticket the same day. Alcatraz tours are usually booked solid days or weeks in advance.

Has anybody out there ever been on Wall Street in New York City? -

What s it like?...is it real busy and is it a long road?

To me the most striking thing about Wall Street is how narrow it is. The buildings are as tall as elsewhere in the city, but this is the oldest part of Manhattan so it was laid out without preparing for a population anywhere near the size of what NYC s turned out to be. So when you re familiar with the wide avenues of midtown or uptown, Wall Street and the surrounding area seem claustrophobic. Then there s the night and day differences between, well... night and day. During business hours it s bustling with people, but by 6 pm the whole area becomes a ghost town. There s almost nothing there; restaurants, bars, stores, all the things that are going on all the time all over the city are basically nonexistent in the financial district or if they re there at all they close when regular business hours end. It s the one part of NYC where the saying the city that never sleeps does not ring true. If you only see the financial district, you d think it s the city that goes to bed early.

Been there many times. Wall Street is the financial heart of the city.Good luckNative New Yorker

It s a very short street. It s busy during the week during business hours, but very quiet evenings and weekends.

-short street-small street-busy inside on work days-quiet after work hours-financial capital of the world

It i a surprisingly short and small street that is very busy when the market is open. All the action takes place inside.

Its is only a couple blocks log. And after business hours there is no one there but the guards and the tourists.

To stay in a dorm room? one overnight. Most college visits or open house are for a day. You can simply call up NIU admissions and ask about a college visit. Most colleges want a two week notice for dorm stay overs and college tours

LIRR from NYC to the Hamptons for a day trip. Advice? -

Hi there. I am going to NYC next week. During the trip I was thinking about taking a little trip out the Hamptons. I realize this time of year the weather must be aweful there (hamptons) but I d still like to see things. But, I have a few questions. If I were to take the train from NYC to The Hamptons, about how much would it cost? And, where exactly would I get off. Also, what are the best places to see/ best beaches/ shops/ dining places to go to? Is it accessible by foot in the Hamptons as well? Or will I need to get a cab from the train station?Just curious. Not sure if it s convient or not.

The train service from Penn to Southampton (and really all of the Hamptons) is very limited especially this time of year. It is about a 2h30m trip each way. A round trip ticket will cost between $33.50 and $46 depending on what time you get on the train. Here is a link to the LIRR website to help you plan: http://lirr42.mta.info/sfweb/faces/indexMuch of the Hamptons closes for winter. It is very seasonal out there. Southampton Village should have a fair something to see and do. Here is the Chamber of Commerce website: http://www.southamptonchamber.com/There is a calendar of events in there that should be helpful. If you do drive, you may want to consider renting a car for the day and driving out. It is a pretty straight forward drive and traffic should be very light this time of year. You would then have the added convenience of getting around and seeing muck more of the little villages and other stops along the way. I briefly looked at Thrifty for 15-Dec and saw a rate of about $67 not including insurance If the LIRR is going to cost $46, suddenly the extra $20 for the car rental is totally worth it to me anyway.I hope that helped. Feel free to email if you have other questions. I ll do my best to answer.Have a GREAT trip!

The Hamptons, which comprises of the towns of Westhampton, Hampton Bays, Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Amagansett and Montauk, are small hamlets that are easily accessible by LIRR train from Penn Station. The entire trip, which includes a change of trains at Babylon, will take about 3 hours each way (6 hours round trip) and the off peak fare ranges from $20 to $22 each way ($40 to $44 round trip). Please note, the towns east of Babylon are not operated by electrified trains, there are operated by diesel hauled trains. Therefore the train schedule east of Babylon is limited.Good luck

I was just out there last weekend. Trust me, rent a car! You ll see so much more. Check out Sag Harbor!
