Need suggestions for getting from East Meadow to NYC for sightseeing with the family.Staying with family in East Meadow but want to visit NYC (times square, statue of liberty, etc...)Will only be there a couple of days. I was told to avoid driving and parking if possible. My dilemma is that I have a large family (5 kids) and my brother has 4 in his family. So will it costs the same to take the LIRR and use the subway in NYC as it will to drive and park? Is there a cheap option in NY that covers the LIRR and the subway? Any suggestions will help! Thanks!
An adult peak round trip ticket from Westbury to Penn will cost you $21.50 when you buy it at the station. Children 5-11 ride for half that (each) and children under 5 ride free. If you all plan on coming in together in a mini van or something, it d probably be cheaper to drive in and park for the day and take the subway once you re in the city. You can park all day for $25 at a garage if you get there before 10(?) am. I ve done this numerous times. Here is the LIRR website:http://mta.info/lirr/pubs/TicketInfo.htmThe parking garage I use is in the Helsley New York hotel. If you go through the Midtown Tunnel, make sure you are in the right lane in the righ-most tube. Once through the tunnel, take the right (you ll be forced to if you stay in the right lane) and go straight. At the 3 rd light, go straight across into the parking garage. In before 10 is the early bird special. It should cost about $21 +tax for a total of about $25. I believe this is the address:222 East 41st StreetNew York, NY 10016 And here is the website:http://www.parkingnewyork.com/MidTown_EaI hope that helps. Email me if you have other questions. I ll be happy to answer the best I can.Have a great trip!
You were told right. You can drive of course, but a lot of your time will be wasted in traffic into and out of the city. The LIRR station in east meadow has a ticket booth where you can ask if there is a discounted fare available. The conditions and availabilty changes so ask at the window before you use the ticket machine. You can get an Unlimited ride MetroCard from the ticket machine. This will work for all buses and subways in the city, but not the LIRR.Whenever possible use the LIRR during the OFF Peak hours for a reduced fare.
It is possible to take the Long Island Bus from Long Island to Jamaica and transfer to the NYC Subway system in Jamaica, which will be your cheapest option. If you get an unlimited ride 1-Day metro card, you can use it all day for $8.50 per person and it s good on the Long Island bus. You can get multiple 1-day cards to cover the other days or a 7-day card for $27.00.There is no bus that goes directly from East Meadow to Jamaica so you can get the 22 or the 22A from the Mineola LIRR station or the Westbury Station or the N6 from the Hempstead Bus Terminal and take it to the 169th Street stop in Jamaica (the first stop in Queens) and go downstairs and get the subway into Manhattan all with the same Metrocard. The E train will take you directly to Times Square from there if that s where you want to start.Granted the LIRR will not take as long as this method, but if you want to go on the cheap, taking the bus to Queens to get the train is the way to go.
to tell the truth, regardless of any cost saving either way, taking the LIRR would be the best option as far as I m concerned. The kids would probably enjoy the ride, the adults could maybe enjoy a few beers, and the train dumps you right into Penn Station, walking distance to Times Square, right up 7th. (or take 6th for some more scenery.)Also I believe kids are 11 are free, or nowadays it s probably younger - but if you go off-peak / non-rush hour, it will be a lot cheaper. And if you go out of the Bellmore or Merrick train stations, it s very easy, free parking, just be sure to park in a non-resident area.
