Can anyone help me as I look for a name and some info on what I think is a former casino or club in Michigan? -

I live in Oakland County Michigan and I remember hearing on the radio the radio hosts mentioning some casino or club that was once around that area I believe. They said that Frank Sinatra played there, and that it had burned down sometime after he had played there. This is what I think was said about it but I can t find anything about it online. If anyone could help me with this club or casino caper, that d be great. Oh and just to tell ya, I m a 19 year old who s just curious and wants to know things! Thanks!

What you are referring to was called the Walled Lake Casino. It was not a gambling casino, but rather an entertainment venue where a all the Big bands played. The Walled Lake casino was part of a larger complex that had various rides like a roller coaster, carousel and small mid-way. Picture a very small Cedar Point or Six-Flags.In the 1960 s the casino moved into teen music with Chuck Berry, all the Motown acts and I believe a very young Bob Seger. IIRC it burned down on Christmas day 1965.http://www.lorimarshick.com/WLHistory.ht

I recall being told that Frank sang at Pinky s (near Belle Isle on Jefferson) in Detroit one time

I bet they were talking about the Elmwood Casino in Windsor, Ontario. This was a huge entertainment venue/supper club in the era of the 40 s through 70 s (and was not a casino in the sense that we know it today - no gambling). All the major stars of the era performed there and it s very likely Frank Sinatra in his early days was one of them. They had everyone from Sammy Davis, Jr., Tom Jones, to Liza Minelli and motown acts. There was a fire there in 1943 which caused $50,000 in damage, which in those days would have been major. It s very possible that Sinatra performed there prior to that. The Elmwood (building) is now a substance abuse rehab facility.

Living in Chinatown, San Francisco? -

I have been researching craigslist and I am looking for a cheap apartment in chinatown for $500 a month or so. It can be very small and I plan to just sleep on an eno hammock. I will be bringing 5k and jobless for now, I plan to ride my bicycle everywhere.Do you know of any apartment names?

$500 a month will get you a room share in SF. Even SRO hotels are about $200 per week. Your best bet to find housing will be the shared housing listings on Craigslist.http://www.craigslist.org

You can get $350 for 60 sq ft room, $500 for 100 sq ft room in China town, all utilities included, but you have to share bathroom and kitchen with 30 other tenants.Actually China town is in perfect geography position in SF, you can go everywhere on feet, that is why during last 150 years, white men have tried to drive China town to Hunter point. There are 5 China towns in SF now, most people refer original China town in Grant, Stockton Street.

For that kind of money, it would be best for you to rent a place by the week or month. Look on craigslist for short term rentals.

What is the price of a pack of Newport 100s in Los Angeles? -

im prolly moving there and my main concern is how much the are, they keep going up

It will vary according to where you shop. Seriously? Your MAIN concern in your move is how much CIGARETTES are going to cost? Your values are SERIOUSLY WHACKED!

You should quite smoking - do you know how much money you can save? If they are $5 a pack (very conservative estimate) and you smoke a pack a day, then in a month you could have had $150 extra dollars to spend. You could get a Toyota Yaris for $150 a month - that s a car, for the price of what you blow up in smoke!

I agree with the 2nd answerI don t smoke at all, and never have, but I do know that cigarettes are expensive no matter where you areyou need to be saving up for when you have emphysema and all the other cool cancers that smoking cause

Better start looking into the nicotine patch, California is about to tax cigarettes into oblivion. And at this point, you aren t even allowed to smoke anywhere but your own home.

depends where you go alot of places have different sales. they average at about $5.30

You guys really expect that she will all of a sudden quit after hearing your complaints?

US Visa Waiver coming back after 30 days? -

My son aged 19 heads back to the UK from the USA tomorrow, he was here in the US on the visa waiver program. I, his mum, am now living in the US and married a US citizen and Im in the process of applying for residency. My question is, my son wants to return for another three months in about three weeks time. We have looked at all the resources out there and we are still very confused if he can come back for another 90 days. BTW he does not want to move here full time.Any help would be appreciated -thanks in advance

There is no set time between visits. You will never find a government rule on this...it is up to the immigration officer. There is also no written rule about total time he may spend in the U.S. every year, but the unwritten rule is 6 months. In other words, a person cannot spend more time in the U.S. than in his own country. See site below.

What are some problems in appalachia? -

eastern kentucky especiallyare poverty, high dropout rates, and flooding real problems or just exaggerated in the news??thanks :)

Let me guess: You lived in the suburbs, and you re in college.Oh yes, problems with an a*hole roommate and questions about birth control, and selling your textbooks. Yup, college girl. The only flooding you ever experienced was a little water in the basement in the springtime.Apparently those conditions are only a problem if they affect you personally.Yes, bad news sells papers, and chronic problems become boring if you are comfortable, but the reality is that those conditions in that area are not exaggerated. They were the reasons that so many people migrated out of there into northern cities, starting with Cincinnati and Detroit.People who share a social value of attachment to the land do not leave for trivial reasons.People who have expectations that an education will benefit them do not leave school. At least some of the floods were caused by strip mining for coal which ultimately provided the electricity that is running your computer right now.

Yes, they re real problems. Diane Sawyer did a special on Appalachia specifically. Everything the previous poster said is true. Poverty, poor living conditions, the mining industry, drop-out rates are high since many have to walk 8 miles to school one way. Families would would walk together into town before dawn. The kids went to elementary, the father went to work, and the mother got groceries and walked back home with her bags 8 miles. And they live on Mountain Dew, parents and kids alike. They don t have access to dental care so their teeth are rotted and decayed. The houses are shacks with leaky roofs and frequently have animals that are not pets coming in. It seemed like they were good, hard-working people with not many other options of places to go. It is true, it s not exaggerated.

There are parts of eastern Kentucky that are quite poor. There is no need to exaggerate it in the news. You can go visit and see for yourself. In the Appalachia region there are people who work as miners. Mining is not only dangerous, but extremely unhealthy and it is a low paying job. Many miners have black lung disease and they also bring the dirt/dust from coal home with them on their clothes thereby causing their family members to breathe that in. The guy that tunes my piano is from West Virginia and he told me of the poor conditions he grew up in and when he went back to visit the area where he grew up, it couldn t take it. No improvements have been made and the area has only deteriorated.
