We took our girls when they were small and my daughter was afraid of the sound. She later found that it was neat to be able to walk through a heart!

What are some safe, fun neighborhoods around Seattle (not downtown) to live? -
The younger hipsters I think tend to flock to Fremont and Ballard. There are a ton of restaurants and bars in Fremont and Ballard, and I have met some really cool 20somethings that have made Fremont or Ballard their homes and that is where they hang out nights and weekends. Before I settled into a more suburban life, Fremont was my stomping ground, particularly the Red Door (bar). Fremont is convenient to Seattle (Queen Anne area) and also downtown, by way of the Fremont Bridge. But sometimes the bridge is closed and a lot of times traffic is nasty. It is not very close to the freeway, although it is convenient to Highway 99 / Aurora, which was the main stretch of road down the coast before Interstate 5 was constructed. Ballard is even less convenient, as it sits further west, and therefore further from the freeway. There is only one road (that I know of) that will take you on a more direct route from Seattle/Downtown to Ballard, and traffic on that road is usually horrific. So while Fremont and Ballard are fun for living and nightlife, if you have to travel into downtown much, you will run into traffic issues. You might also consider Capitol Hill. Capitol Hill is a neighborhood just east of downtown Seattle, and it is very young and vibrant. There are fabulous restaurants and bars in the area. Parking is a disaster in Capitol Hill, but it s worth it to venture out that way. What I love about Capitol Hill is that you can be on the main drag (Broadway) and be walking past bars, restaurants, modest apartments, boutique shops, and it s all very urban. And then you can go just a couple of blocks east and be in old Seattle - ritzy neighborhoods with gorgeous mansion homes. I LOVE walking around there or driving through the neighborhoods looking at houses and wishing I would know how that half lives ... :) Capitol Hill has had a reputation for being the gay/lesbian part of Seattle, but I think that it s much more diverse now.Another neighborhood that came to mind is Belltown. Now Belltown is not technically downtown, but it s so close to downtown that it might as well be downtown. I know your question mentions not wanting downtown, but if you are after some great bars/restaurants and nightlife, Belltown is where you want to be. Belltown has a great mix of people and you really can t beat the bar/restaurant scene that you would get there. My boyfriend and I were considering moving to Belltown - we currently live in the Central District, which is just east of the International District. In the end we decided to stay where we are because we love our apartment and didn t want to take a chance on another one and having it be bad. But we were really really tempted ... Belltown is awesome and would have been a great move for our social life! If you work downtown, Belltown would be super convenient.Hope this helps ... if you have any other questions, let me know!
Columbia City is a cool neighborhood with lots of little restaurants and shops.
