You need a passport. Took my daughter to Toronto last year (she was 1.5 yr old then). And yes, you can get a US citizen passport at 17 (my daughter has her own) and you don t need parental permission as long as you have the info on where you are staying. If you have a hotel booking for example. If you are staying with a friend or relative, have them send you a letter stating that you are staying with them and a photocopy of their id/driving license with the address you are staying at. Will be required to fill up a form before you land in Toronto and if you have all these document proving you have a place to stay, the immigration officer won t hassle you.
Yes, as of June 1, 2009 everyone of any age needs a passport to fly to another country from the US.To get a passport you ll need to bring your birth certificate and both of your parents will have to go with you. If one can t go that parent will have to write a letter stating you have permission to get a passport. At 17 you don t need a letter of permission for the airline when you travel within the country, but some airlines require it when it s an international flight. Check with your airline of choice when you buy the ticket.
