Vacation for 5 days in/around Seattle in January. Wondering about the weather? -

I realize January may not be the best month to visit Seattle for the first time, but it s when we have the time to go. Also we a considering a move there later on as well so I figured January would be a good time to see Seattle at it s worst maybe? I realize it s going to be colder and raining, just wondering what the rain will really be like....pouring all day everyday or just sprinkling throughout the day? We will be there in the 2nd week of January if that matters at all. I m not really worried about the cold, we re from Minnesota so that won t matter it s just the rain I m worried about. Thanks

It s rarely pouring all day every day here. Usually it s just a light misty rain and frankly, January can be absolutely AWESOME if you happen to get a week of sunny weather (yeah, it really happens!). Like, this week it is going to be FREEEEEEEEEEEZING (literally, like, the high is supposed to be 31 today) which is unusual for Seattle, but it s totally sunny and the mountains and Sound are so beautiful when it s like this!I would check out the 10-day forecast at www.king5.com before you come...Rich Marriott is their weather guy and he s usually spot-on. But you never know...could be sprinkly (more likely), could be pouring (less likely) and could be sunny (well, you can always dream). Bundle up, wear layers, and come enjoy your visit! Note: it can get REALLY windy in downtown Seattle in the winter...the wind just whips up off the Sound, so plan for that if you re going to be mostly downtown. Umbrellas are USELESS in the wind...you need a good rain-proof hooded jacket instead. Also downtown has a lot of STEEP hills so if it s icy it can be really slippery...

Definitely bring rain gear. Something gortex with a hood is ideal.
