I am moving from CS to NY uws 81st is htis a good area? what should i watch out for? would you live there? -

i am 20 yeasr old and i have never lived outside of california. NY is a big change but is that area a nice area, should i feel safe by myself? How different is the weather? and is the subway a scary thing? what are some things i should know?

You are moving to a beautiful, safe, and highly desirable neighborhood. You have absolutely nothing to worry about. You ll be surrounded by countless cafes, restaurants, and coffee shops. You ll be a stone s throw away from The Museum of Natural History (and the Shake Shack, a superb gourmet burger shake joint behind the museum), Central Park, Riverside Park, Zabars, Fairway, movie theaters, a huge Barnes Noble, beautiful New York brownstones, turn-of-the-century apartment towers, etc. This was a great choice. The weather is much more variable in New York: we ll get 90+ degree (and humid) summers and 20 degree (and snowy) winters. It s much more seasonal than California and at the extremes of winter/summer it s pretty brutal. The most comfortable times are May, June, September, October. You ll be shocked at how *unscary* the subway is and how popular it ll be at all hours of the day and night. One thing to look out for, though, is they do frequent construction so subway service is always disrupted on weekends and late nights. You ll get used to seeing the weekly disruption notices plastered all over the stations. But you re in for a great time. You re going to love it here!

81 st is very nice, very close to Zabar s. Make sure that there really is an apt there for you to rent, don t get scammed,Get yourself some nice warm socks.

Does any one know any quotes about Hawaii? -

Im writing a speech about why hawaii is an amazing vacation destination, and I would like to open with a quote. However, i m having some trouble finding one. (also, im focusing on oahu. A quote about Hawaii in general would be fine. Even one just about tropical islands, maybe. But preferable not a quote on any one specific island unless its oahu. ) Help me out?

In what other land save this one is the commonest form of greeting not Good day, nor How d ye do , but Love ? That greeting is Aloha : love, I love you, my love to you... It is a positive affirmation of the warmth of one s own heart-giving. Jack London, My Hawaii Aloha 1916

Ua mau ka ea o ka aina i ka pono. That is the state motto of Hawaii. It means the love of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. You can hear the proper pronunciation in this song by Israel Kamakawiwo ole (IZ), one of Hawaii s most beloved singers.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UubfgGDRJ

Aloha!

I am travelling to Maui and want to shop at Costco, how will I be able to pay for my purchases? -

Cash, Check, Debit, or American ExpressAbove poster is right, we don t usually take credit cards, However, Amex provides exclusive deals for Costco members, so in return, they are accepted at every Costco internationally.

Cash or debit card--no credit cards used as credit cards. There s a BankOh (Bank of Hawaii) ATM right past the cash registers, with the usual fee for cards from other banks.

umm, with money? hawaii doesn t use seashell currency any more, you know. :)

Las Vegass version of Hurricane Katrina? -

I am curious about something. Almost everyone knows that engineers were writing reports for about 50 years that basically said we built most of New Orleans below sea level, and if we ever get a hurricane that hits the city the place is going to flood. Then Katrina surprised us by doing exactly that.--------------------In California they ve known that sooner or later the San Andreas Fault is going to rupture, and the expectation is that there will be a 30 drop in the El Cajon pass. It will shut down the rail lines, smash interstate 15, cut the power lines, and all the fiber optic cable. Actually unlike Katrina which was based on probability, we know the San Andreas fault MUST rupture, since that is the only way to relieve the tectonic stress building along the fault line.--------------------We know that the repairs could take forever, and cost a significant fraction of a trillion dollars. Without the use of Interstate 15, the other routes from Los Angeles are hopelessly overcrowded, narrow roads that are already so overused that traffic moves at an average of 30 mph. --------------------Knowing that the city will be driven to near collapse, don t you think that they should build an alternative freeway to Los Angeles? It would go from Barstow to Palmdale and replace the tiny Antelope Valley expressway to Santa Clarita and downtown Los Angeles. -----------------There is a slight possibility that both freeways would collapse, but the Antelope Valley portion of the fault slipped in 1857. The best guess is that this portion won t slip for an additional century.--------------I think if the freeway is down for 9 months it will dwarf the current recession in Las Vegas. Can you imagine a Las Vegas where 95% of the drive in traffic from Los Angeles is gone? In addition, many people will be afraid to drive through the pass for years, because there will be television coverage of cars flying over the cliff and smashing into chasms. --------------Will we just say Why didn t anyone prepare for this decades ago?

Have you seen the desert and the I-15? If the freeway were cracked it would be at one point. You grade a detour in the desert around the broken part. Maybe a 3-4 hour job tops. Heck, half the time, the traffic will just go round the break by itself. I ve even been out there off road in a regular car. A semi can do cross country for most of it. 30 feet of vertical displacement, something that is unheard of with a quake, merely means 5-10 Caterpillars and a few earth movers. A week tops before traffic could move on dirt.As well, the San Andreas is right at LA, not way out in the desert. Where it passes under the 15 is a choke point but there are enough ways in and out of LA to get through. I have actually gotten out of the car and stared right down at the San Andreas fault. Stood right next to it. The displacement will not be 30 feet vertical. If you look at the terrain you will see it is a sideways slip there. As well, there is a freeway being built from Barstow to Palmdale. Except it runs to Mojave a few miles north of Palmdale. The 138. I have driven that road, through Kramer Junction several times. The road through there has been there a long time. But I do not know what you are talking about average speed on the 15 averaging 30 MPH. I have drivern from Vegas to LA at times in under over 3 hours. Long stretches at 100. A slow down here and there and an occasional jam as you get into San Bernardino.Besides, Vegas has the 93 to the south to Kingman where you can pick up the 10 into LA. Or north to the get the 80 into the Bay area. And there are roads to the east. To Salt Lake City or east from Kingman to Flagstall and Phoenix.Las Vegas itself is in a disaster free area. No quakes or anything else. And there are plenty of ways to get to and from the place. The I-15 is merely the shortest between LA and Vegas. So really, don t panic. Getting to Vegas from LA after a quake is a pretty low priority. And Vegas would still have all the USA to the east to get its stuff from.

Conjecture about the collapse of anything. Nevada has had all kinds of quakes for generations. But unlike LA most roads are at ground level, not on stilts.

If another freeway were built, the earthquake would destroy it too. I don t see the point.

You have to tough it out.Grew up in NJ and as a kid there was fear of nuclear attack. The entire state and region had missle bases to combat the potential for devistation. People built bomb shelters in Bergen County, New Jersey. Then there was a fear that the nuclear reactors would fail one day and would need a mass evacuation into the west. Never happened, but people prepared. Actually worked on the evacuation and rescue and recovery on the World Trade Center in Sept. 2001. Road were closes and access were shut down. Frickin Wall Street was closed for several days. Things did stop, but the world continued. We all did what we could to return to normalcy. So, I hope nothing adverse occurrs here, but if it does, we have to band together and work it out.

What permits or license do you need to open a Travel Agency in Texas? -

I want to open a travel agency (a small office) that offers adventure family tours to Latin America. What do i need to get started or how do i do it.

hmm, you should ask Authority that what they need for opening Travel Agency in Texas.

Determine what type of business you will become. You can choose from a sole proprietorship, business partnership, Limited liability Corporation, (LLC) or a corporation. Each form of business comes with its own advantages and disadvantages.Step 2 Write out a business plan. You can do a business plan yourself or hire someone to do it for you. A business plan serves as a road map or a blueprint for your business, and it includes information about advertising and marketing and future growth opportunities. You should include revenue, sales and costs of doing business as well. Your business plan will help you attract capital from banks or other lending institutions.Step 3 Get the correct licenses and permits. You need to check with the county, state and other regulators to make sure you have the correct license to do business. You will need a license for the state where your business is located. If you collect debts in other states, you have to be licensed in those states as wellStep 4 Start from your home. Many small business owners start right from their home. As you grow and get more customers you can rent a small office space. Starting out in an office space can be costly if you don t have any revenue coming in.Step 5 Get some clients. Contact banks, financial institutions or retail outlets and let them know you are in the collections business. Offer to do second placement accounts. These are accounts that one collection agency has already worked to a conclusion and the account has been closed because it could not collect money from the debtor. These are tough, but if you can collect on these a company may turn its entire portfolio of bad debts over to you. This will help you the most in setting up new buisness........

Don t forget to file an assumed name certificate with the county as well.

Im Going to San Francisco for Monday Night Football...any helpful tips? -

I m going to San Francisco to go see Monday Night Football (49ers and the Cardinals). I ve never been to the bay area and I m super excited. I just need some helpful tips, like, where to eat, tips on tailgating, traffic, where to go after the game, bars/clubs, sightseeing, etc. I m staying near Fisherman s Wharf. Thank you so much.

If you are driving to the ballpark, start very early because traffic is heavy and rush hour traffic is being added on top of that.Fisherman s Wharf is within walking distance to Chinatown, North Beach, Coit Tower, the Embarcadero, and Union Square. If you are into strolling around, a lot of sites are within walking distance. Parking is heck in San Francisco, so you are better off taking the bus or walking to see the sites. There are plenty of Italian restaurants in the North Beach along Columbus Street and its cross streets. You can find plenty of cheap eats in Chinatown. Fisherman s Wharf has plenty of seafood restaurants to choose from. For Chinese food, I recommend the New Sun Hong Kong Restaurant on Columbus at Broadway. If you want more high class Chinese dining, then try the R G Lounge on Kearny at Commercial. For Italian food, I recommend Pomodero on Union at Columbus. If you want Japanese food, there is Sushi Rock on Pine at Grant. If you are inclined to shopping, Union Square is in the downtown shopping area. All the tittie bars are on Broadway in the North Beach area. Hooters is in Fisherman s Wharf.Weekday mornings are the best time to visit Golden Gate Park. There is a pay lot there, but street parking is not as much an issue on weekdays. Make sure you check the signs for street cleaning or 2-hour zones. The Academy of Science and the De Young Museum are in the park across from each other.

How can You get cash to go from NY to Cali and get a place there too? **10 POINTS BEST ANSWER? -

Say you got no money, no cash, your on your own, homeless and you gotta get to California from new york, and your gonna need a place there too. What do you do? Where do you get money to make the trip? How will you pay it back?

-why would you go to cali if you dont have any support and the economy is just as bad if not, worse?-GET A JOB!!!-ask from family, get a job and pay a loan!-call your family. if you are talking about yourself, you have a computer, email family and tell them where you are!

I have no idea, but oh my god are you homeless?! Why don t you have any money?Im not snobby or anything but your question is so interesting !

Thinking of moving to St. Louis... Is it safe? Where is the best place in St. Louis? -

We need to move in a couple of months and St. Louis is on the list due to particular university that is there. I have not heard good things about the city. Is it safe? Where is safe to live in the city? It will be myself and my husband and children soon.

If you have children, I d suggest St. Louis County unless you plan to send them to private schools. The housing in the city is great and city living is fun but what you save on houses you will spend on private schools. If you choose the county I would suggest either West or South. West is more expensive than South but you can still find some good buys especially in this economy. Both the West and South County areas have good schools. If you are considering Washington University it is easier to access from West County using Highway 40/64. The city is safe but you do have to be careful of some areas. You dont want to be in north city. North county also has some problems so I d probably steer clear of that area too.

As a real estate agent myself this is really a loaded question St. Louis is a combination of St. Louis City and St. Louis County which is a collection on a great number of municipality s, some of which have their own school systems, police, fire etc, and some do not. The St. Louis City website has a map service which will show all the crime stats and where they occurred. Like any city there are areas to avoid and areas that are very affluent. However St. Louis is kinda strange in that one block can make that difference. The questions I would ask are how old are the kids (grades k- 8, high school, or soon on to college)? What University are you talking about, and what is your budget, for a home. The good news here is St. Louis has some of the most affordable housing for a large city in the country. A nice middle of the road home 3 bed 2 bath could be anywhere from 120,000 - 170,000 on average. Any high than this and you start get get into nicer and nicer homes. Also speaking from personal experience driving in other cities, you can get almost anywhere in about 30 - 40 minutes. Finally I would ask where are you coming from? what is the average price of a home there. I would be happy to help you figure this out on a one on one basis. Feel free to give me a call and we can go from there. BTW my name is Daniel Kahmke with Coldwell Banker Premier Group 314-446-7549, dkahmke@topproducer.com. Thanks and I ll look for your call/e-mail.

I have heard there is a side of town to be on and one not too. Personally, a realator could address your concerns. But having had children I can tell you the school district is everything and even now I would do private if I could do it over.

It depends on what part of the city you move to. Right around the university maybe, but St.Charles area is better than St. Louis city as far as crime. I have lived here for 17 yrs. Some communities around Stlouis are great to live in also.

Nowhere in St. Louis city is good for children in regard to schools or going to parks, riding bikes, etc.The only part of the city I would recommend would be in the area of St. Louis Hills.

The Western part of St. Louis County is safer the the CBD. The CWE was pretty safe for the two years I lived there are it is near the Hospital District.

Is Los Angeles really es a bleached-out soulless pit? -

Robert Sean Leanord says so in this article: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2009/11/robert-sean-leonard-on-house-movies-and-his-happy-lack-of-ambition.htmlI m planning to move there later on in my life, but I was just wondering if he either has no backbone or easily agitated.

Personally, I think RSL is a cultural snob and a primadonna. He makes his money writing for TV, then bites the hand that feeds him. No class at all.First of all, I ll tell you what it s NOT like: It s not like anything on TV. People watch shows on TV and think thats what its like out here. The Real OC, Newport Beach, The Hills, etc. Ever wonder why people in those shows never have to pay bills, do laundry, and are NEVER stuck in traffic? Because its FAKE. And the news doesnt help either, since they know that sex and sensationalism sells. News flash: There arent running gun battles in the street. There arent shootouts every day. Also, you dont see celebrities just walking down the street, all glammed up, or sipping a cappuccino at Starbucks waiting to sign autographs. We don t go surfing during lunch hour. Some sections are REALLY nice, others are ghetto. Too many people have this vision in their head that LA and Orange County are one or the other (either Beverly Hills or Compton). They either think it is a fairy tale fantasy or an apocalyptic ghetto. In fact, most of it is working class and middle class stiffs working to pay the bills. Like me.The variety of food here is incredible. New Yorkers come here and complain that the pizza is terrible (its not as good as NY Pizza), but the Mexican food is GREAT here. That more than makes up for it. The weather here is incredible. 340+ days of sunshine makes up for a lot of traffic. You NEED a car to live in Southern California. We dont have an effective public transportation like New York or San Francisco. One reason is that LA is larger in area than either of those, without a central hub. Hollywood is 8 miles north of downtown, and 38 miles north of Disneyland. Average commute is 20-30 miles.. The freeway traffic is probably the worst thing about living here. The 405 is the worst. Know why they call it the 405? Because you go 4 o 5 miles per hour, and it takes 4 o 5 hours to get where you re going. Freeway Traffic is bad from 6-10 AM and bad from 3-7 PM. I don t know why they call it rush hour. It s more than an hour, and nobody s rushing, that s for sure. The gangs are the cause of many rumors. Keep in mind that there are gangs in any large town, in every part of the country. In LA, the gangs aren t really downtown, they are in South LA, East LA, and north Long Beach. And here s the deal: Mostly, they just kill each other.Gas is expensive in California. Its about 20-30 cents above the national average. Yes, gas and real estate are very expensive in SoCal. However, this would be the best time to BUY a house because it s a buyer s market right now. There are a lot of foreclosures, and too many houses on the market. If you want to rent, figure on $1200 per month for a 1BR in a decent neighborhood. You need to make about $30,000 per year in order to do that. You can t do it on minimum wage.Yep, freeways are a drag, it s smoggy in summer, and expensive to live here. Yet, if it s so bad, why do we have thousands and thousands of people moving here? Weather, year-round activities, jobs, beaches, mountains, and deserts all within driving distance, and plenty of opportunity for those who have the skills and tenacity. However, it is not for everyone. Every time someone posts this question, you get the LA haters who post their bile and venom. A lot of them dont know what they are talking about. Some people never even visit, and hate it on principle and stereotypes. Some actually visited once, and found out it wasnt like it was on TV, and it certainly wasnt Mayberry. And some actually lived here, and couldnt deal with the expense, the traffic, or the somewhat impersonal nature of living in a large metropolis. Its just the lifestyle here: People want their own private space. Its sort of you do your thing, Ill do mine. To those hateful souls I would say good luck to you wherever you are, but please dont spew your hatred in this forum. To summarize, its a HUGE metropolis that really defies easy description. I live in one of the nicer suburbs, but the commute is no fun, often 1-2 hours each way each day. However, 340+ days of sunshine really helps. Yeah, it s expensive. Mrs. Obviousman and I both have to work to pay the mortgage. But is it worth it? Absolutely!

Congratulations! You just realized that Los Angeles isn t what you see on MTV!! :D HORRAY!!

It s a Bittersweet Symphony.

It is, at once, all things.

Re-enter the US on a 10 years multiple entry visa.? -

I have been on and off in the US for the past year and a half. My current I-94 is expiring on this coming February 2010. I have reasons to believe that my name has been flagged when my cousin crossed the border a few weeks ago. The agent at the border asked her who she would visit while in the US. She gave him my name. On this, the agent call me to verify that she will indeed stay at my place (I am not a resident, just here on a tourist visa B2, my partner is a US citizen and actually answered the call at first) and ask me my info and obviously checked my file. He then tells me that I should leave the country immediately because I have been here too long and will not be able to come back if I stay any longer (wtf?). I have always been here legally, always respected my visa requirements and limitations, left when I had to leave and was accepted in no problem (3 times now). Now I am wondering what is going to happen when I leave the US in February to visit family in my home country, or should I say, I worry about the scenario when I try to come back into the US. I intend to stay away for about a month or two. Has anybody heard or experienced a similar situation or can anybody tell me if entry will be refused to me when I try to come back ? I have all the things they ask for (money in bank account, residence in home country, and all that jazz) when entering on a 10 years multiple entry visa. I tried to find this information on multiple websites but could not find anything relevant, thought I would drop a line in here. Thanks to you all for your help and advice.

There is no written restriction against staying in the U.S. for more than 6 months in a year, but it IS an unwritten rule. You cannot visit in the U.S. longer than you actually stay outside the U.S. in any given year. if you stay in the U.S. a total of more than 6 months in a year, it looks to immigration like you are actually living in the U.S. on a tourist visa...a BIG no-no. Sounds like that may be what you are actually doing. The last immigration officer who filled out an I-94 for you obviously did not notice and gave you too much time on your I-94. When you leave, you should really stay away at least 3 months.

Which neighborhood in Houston, TX has the best Christmas lights? -

I really want to look at Christmas lights this year. Can anyone tell which neighborhood in Houston, TX has the best Christmas light displays? Thanks so much!

Lights in the Heights is always big fun and plenty of lights.

I would have to agree with Sweetmom, as she said Prestonwood has got most organized light arrangements ever seen. Even if you go to christmast wonderland in college station and pay $20 bucks, it won t beat this lights.

Prestonwood. All of the neighborhood organize together and have a theme each year. It s very impressive. Here is an article from the Chronicle with several places...http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/life

We check out Lights in the Heights every year.

Where is a good place to view the stars in orange county? -

I dont want to travel for more than a half hour to 45 min. and please dont just answer any hill or desert or big bear, im looking for specifics pretty please that are kinda close.

We can t seem to get it through to people that there is no good place to view the stars in the area. Too much light pollution from LA and OC. I did have a place in mind up on Ortega Highway, called Ortega Oaks campground. But you can t get there right now, since there s a huge wildfire burining up there. It makes for rather poor viewing, with all the smoke, planes, and helicopters. Besides, the road is closed. Why not just go up to Santiago Canyon or Modjeska?

You just have to be away from lights. So even a parking lot in a commercial area without lights will work just fine.

Whats the story behind Le Reve at Wynn-Las Vegas? -

I was staying at the Wynn in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, and my husband and I took tickets to watch the show-Le Reve at the hotel. It was phenomenal. No thought about it! I was wondering--what is the story behind Le Reve? Please and thank you!! *Answer this if you ve seen Le Reve...please do not answer my question if you do not know or have never seen Le Reve. Thanks!*

Le Rve was the first production show to open in the Wynn Las Vegas casino resort. It is set in a one million-gallon water capacity theater and features diving and feats of strength with state-of-the-art special effects, where no seat is more than 40 feet from the stage. The production was created by Franco Dragone and is similar to the shows produced by Cirque du Soleil. Dragone, who was the director behind O, La Nouba, Mystre, Alegra and Quidam, Le Rve was the working name of the resort before it was changed to Wynn Las Vegas. Le Rve means The Dream in French, and is the name of the centerpiece painting that Steve Wynn owns, Le Rve by Picasso.Le Rve is to create an entirely new universe, to transport everyone into a world where the theater, performance and audience become one and the same reality, says Franco. To take them on a journey that through their consciousness touches the emotions in a way that is different and goes further than anything I have done before. To provoke memories and communicate to the audience the fragility of humanity. Stones and stars are our sisters continues Franco paraphrasing Hubert Reeves, life is short but our race is forever and we all have a responsibility to preserve the links in the chain of life. Believing that we never dream completely, are never awake completely; are never totally happy or sad, DRAGONE is presenting a small collection of imperfect dreams that question our place in the universe through a completely new form of staging and artistic performance, where the theater and water are alive with a translucent energy.

LeReve is the dream (French) and bizarre. There is no specific story including that of the pregnant lady

Well Le Reve means the dream So see if that helps.
