Is Los Angeles really es a bleached-out soulless pit? -

Robert Sean Leanord says so in this article: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2009/11/robert-sean-leonard-on-house-movies-and-his-happy-lack-of-ambition.htmlI m planning to move there later on in my life, but I was just wondering if he either has no backbone or easily agitated.

Personally, I think RSL is a cultural snob and a primadonna. He makes his money writing for TV, then bites the hand that feeds him. No class at all.First of all, I ll tell you what it s NOT like: It s not like anything on TV. People watch shows on TV and think thats what its like out here. The Real OC, Newport Beach, The Hills, etc. Ever wonder why people in those shows never have to pay bills, do laundry, and are NEVER stuck in traffic? Because its FAKE. And the news doesnt help either, since they know that sex and sensationalism sells. News flash: There arent running gun battles in the street. There arent shootouts every day. Also, you dont see celebrities just walking down the street, all glammed up, or sipping a cappuccino at Starbucks waiting to sign autographs. We don t go surfing during lunch hour. Some sections are REALLY nice, others are ghetto. Too many people have this vision in their head that LA and Orange County are one or the other (either Beverly Hills or Compton). They either think it is a fairy tale fantasy or an apocalyptic ghetto. In fact, most of it is working class and middle class stiffs working to pay the bills. Like me.The variety of food here is incredible. New Yorkers come here and complain that the pizza is terrible (its not as good as NY Pizza), but the Mexican food is GREAT here. That more than makes up for it. The weather here is incredible. 340+ days of sunshine makes up for a lot of traffic. You NEED a car to live in Southern California. We dont have an effective public transportation like New York or San Francisco. One reason is that LA is larger in area than either of those, without a central hub. Hollywood is 8 miles north of downtown, and 38 miles north of Disneyland. Average commute is 20-30 miles.. The freeway traffic is probably the worst thing about living here. The 405 is the worst. Know why they call it the 405? Because you go 4 o 5 miles per hour, and it takes 4 o 5 hours to get where you re going. Freeway Traffic is bad from 6-10 AM and bad from 3-7 PM. I don t know why they call it rush hour. It s more than an hour, and nobody s rushing, that s for sure. The gangs are the cause of many rumors. Keep in mind that there are gangs in any large town, in every part of the country. In LA, the gangs aren t really downtown, they are in South LA, East LA, and north Long Beach. And here s the deal: Mostly, they just kill each other.Gas is expensive in California. Its about 20-30 cents above the national average. Yes, gas and real estate are very expensive in SoCal. However, this would be the best time to BUY a house because it s a buyer s market right now. There are a lot of foreclosures, and too many houses on the market. If you want to rent, figure on $1200 per month for a 1BR in a decent neighborhood. You need to make about $30,000 per year in order to do that. You can t do it on minimum wage.Yep, freeways are a drag, it s smoggy in summer, and expensive to live here. Yet, if it s so bad, why do we have thousands and thousands of people moving here? Weather, year-round activities, jobs, beaches, mountains, and deserts all within driving distance, and plenty of opportunity for those who have the skills and tenacity. However, it is not for everyone. Every time someone posts this question, you get the LA haters who post their bile and venom. A lot of them dont know what they are talking about. Some people never even visit, and hate it on principle and stereotypes. Some actually visited once, and found out it wasnt like it was on TV, and it certainly wasnt Mayberry. And some actually lived here, and couldnt deal with the expense, the traffic, or the somewhat impersonal nature of living in a large metropolis. Its just the lifestyle here: People want their own private space. Its sort of you do your thing, Ill do mine. To those hateful souls I would say good luck to you wherever you are, but please dont spew your hatred in this forum. To summarize, its a HUGE metropolis that really defies easy description. I live in one of the nicer suburbs, but the commute is no fun, often 1-2 hours each way each day. However, 340+ days of sunshine really helps. Yeah, it s expensive. Mrs. Obviousman and I both have to work to pay the mortgage. But is it worth it? Absolutely!

Congratulations! You just realized that Los Angeles isn t what you see on MTV!! :D HORRAY!!

It s a Bittersweet Symphony.

It is, at once, all things.

Rich Areas to live in America ? -

Safest places to live in America? I am around the state of New York and thinking of South California. Like no crime rate, no gangs, no fighting, no loud music. Just wealthy, classy, well mattered, civilized, respectful people. What areas can I find that have these characteristic s ? - Please give some detail. age 18(male)

One of the safest cities in America is El Paso, Texas. The economy over there is pretty good because there is a numerous quantity of people coming from the Mexico, and buying stuff to us and giving us their money. Everything here is very quiet, and full of technology. A rich area, and as same as popular is Santa Fe, New Mexico. Many artists, like Brad, Juan Grabriel, etc. have their own houses in there. Everything is Santa Fe is expensive! But everything in there its fine. In winter the snow covers all the forest and it looks pretty cool, and in summer there are many activities to do there.

El Paso is a dirty ,crime ridden, gang infested, drug cartel run ,hell hole.Don t be misled by this answer please. It is NOT a safe city .It is just across the border from Juarez where crime and murders abound with something like 185 women killed there I m not sure how many other murders. Report Abuse

Try Carmel ,IN a very wealthy city with everything you need plus a winning football team the ColtsI lived in El Paso and all your answerer said is not true .please don t move to El Paso. Report Abuse

i live in morris county, nj and it is 9th on the richest counties in the country, but is also one of the most expensive partially because its in nj and really expensive.

I live in Malibu . it is beautiful but very very expensive . Everyone keeps them selves to them selvesThe crime rate is very very low there are good schools . Beautiful scenery , wonderful beaches

Things to do/see in Chicago? -

going to Chicago next weekend and interested in some ideas of what to do, and where to stay. Not into the club scene but would like to be close to some nice chill bars and in a good part of town.

Art Institute would be best!

There are tons of things to do in this wonderful city, we have the best museums such as the art institute and the museum of science and industry, we have 2 great zoos, lincoln park zoo and brookfield zoo. Also the best architecture including, of course the sears tower but also the frank lloyd wright house and the john hancock building, our downtown is filled with tall buildings, there are also tons of parks Urbs in Horto is our motto city in a garden in downtown there are two big parks that are connected to each other millenium and grant park, millenium park has the bean and the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, however you re coming during a season that isn t very pleasant, but if you re tough or from alaska then you might want to sit through a bears game at soldier field. Chicago also is home to a mile full of overpriced brand name stores and a few humongous malls on the magnificent mile. You might also want to check out the Second City comedy club, and no trip to Chicago is complete without a ride on the L and without trying our dishes, head over to portillo s in the nightlife area of downtown for some great Chicago-style hot dogs, or go down to Taylor street and try some italian beef and go to other italian restaurants down there, and you can t forget to try the Chicago pie at giordano s, pizzeria uno, or lou malnati sI hope this helped and have a good time in Chicago!

Where are you staying?? There are a lot of museums to see and TONS of lounges that you can visit that has live music (or not). There is the Sears Tower also and lots of things to do within the city itself. The city actually has more broadway shows than NY (it s a fact). Travel is very easy throughout the city also.Lastly, they offer a free tour guide from locals who can also help you out. it s done by locals who volunteer their time. Called Chicago Greeter. You can google them. Definately do the food thing also to check out some of the unique foods such as pizza and hotdogs and italian beefs.Mostly, just have fun and enjoy the view of the lake. It s better in the summer... but, just buddle up.

You should stay in the Best Western Grant Park Hotel.Try this site for things to do/see:http://www.chicagotraveler.com/attractioSite get s UPDATED for new stuff coming up..

Question about New York, NY?!? -

I live in Washington but I m planning on moving all the way across the country to New York, New York. I don t know much about it so I was wondering if anyone could let me know which of these areas is generally the safest and nicest neighborhood: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, Jersey, Long Island, Westchester or Fairfield (or anywhere else). Also if they have community colleges or high schools? Thanks! :)

First of all, Westchester, Fairfield, NEW Jersey, and Long Island (at least, not what New Yorkers mean when they say Long Island ) are NOT a part of NYC. You will find, when you come here, that there is a big difference between NYC and its suburbs. Second of all, Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island are not neighborhoods . They are boroughs. A borough is a political distinction for these five LARGE sections of New York City, each the size of a large city by itself. (Brooklyn is about the size of Philadelphia, for example!) Each borough is also a county, making NYC the only city which is made up of five separate counties! Within each borough are dozens and dozens of neighborhoods. For example, I live in the neighborhood of Park Slope in Brooklyn. It s a nice residential neighborhood, but fairly pricey these days. If you can afford to live in Manhattan, some VERY nice neighborhoods are the West Village, Soho, or Tribecca, but you probably can t come close to affording to live in any of these! Many people who can t afford Manhattan end up in Brooklyn or Queens these days, though less in Park Slope then they used to - Park Slope is almost as expensive as Manhattan today! But, if you are interested in Brooklyn, you might try Kensington, Prospect Heights or Windsor Terrace these days. Sunset Park is a real bargain, and I predict it will be the next up and coming neighborhood. Also, you might like DUMBO or Greenpoint, which are close to Williamsburg (considered a very hip neighborhood, but also way too expensive these days!) As for Queens, I know less about that, but you might try Astoria or Long Island City. And if they are too expensive, you might try Elmhurst. Good luck.

NY is the safest big city in America, but coming from the west coast, it will be a culture shock for you. Tons of community colleges, but NYC public schools have a hiring freeze in place right now if you are looking for a job there, also NY has VERY strict and high standards for schoolteachers. If I got a masters in teaching from California, I would still not be certified to teach in NY until I jumped through all their hoops. I live currently in the murder capital of NY. Hooray! Way worse here than NYC.

I live in NJ and it s very safe here. So NJ is the safest, then Manhattan (but very expensive), then Brooklyn, then Queens. I wouldn t recommend the others. Good luck!

How much time can you do for embezelling 10,000 in tn? -

Enough that it would not be worth it for anyone to do so. Not to mention the fact that even if you do not go to jail you will have to live with the guilty conscious of knowing you broke the law and hurt other people to be greedy.

About the smell in the swan and dolphin hotel orlando florida? -

hey ive been to the swan and dolphin hotel in orlando florida. And i was wondering what was that smell inside the lobby. It smelled really good.please tell me whats it called and if i could get it into my own home.

I don t know what they use, but I used to work at a hotel where they would spray their own signature scent, so I know that hotels do that. Some people loved it, some people hated it. Our scent wasn t available for purchase, but it s worth contacting the hotel to see if they sell it. Many hotels have brochures in their rooms where you can order their sheets pillows, etc, perhaps this hotel also offers their air freshener?

That s why I love staying there! the smell is so unique. It s like carpet cleaner and air conditioning and chlorine. All weird smells on their own, but they work so well together-it screams I LOVE THIS HOTEL!
