I want to go for New Year s Eve and I know things can get quite expensive in Miami. Would it be wise to stay in Ft. Lauderdale and drive to Miami for the nightlife?
The person that said 15 minutes obviously doesn t know what he/she s talking about. It s at least 45 minutes driving fast and with little traffic, but even on normal weekdays, there s rush hour traffic most of the day, in the mornings, afternoons, night, even after midnight. So it s always at LEAST 1 hour to get from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami. But that s just on normal days, on weekends it takes longer. And on holidays like New Year s Eve expect bumper to bumper traffic, only moving 1 inch every 10 minutes. My honest advice, since the main concern here seems to be price, is to just stay in the Miami area. I don t know who misinformed you on Miami being expensive, but it s not. Yes, there s really expensive condos, homes, etc. here but there is also a lot of inexpensive places to stay. Now it really all depends on what you plan on doing in Miami. My advice for New Years would be to stay in either Miami or Miami Beach. Some of the reasons why is because the best of the best nightlife in all South Florida is in Miami(specifically Downtown Miami) and Miami Beach. In Miami and Miami Beach you can walk anywhere so you don t have to worry about renting a car or bringing your own car (if you drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami, you have to spend money on gas to get there and back PLUS the fee on renting a car). If you don t feel like walking you can always take any of the mass transit (some of them are even free like the metromover). All the clubs, bars, etc. are really close to each other so you could take a cab for a really low fee since they re close. And Miami is right next to Miami Beach, just a bridge away, so no problem getting from one to the other. Now on where to stay. You can pick between extremely luxurious hotels that are expensive or nice hotels that s inexpensive and that are really close to all the nightlife. Just do a little googling around and you ll see what I mean. Oh before I forget, don t forget to check out the Orange Drop (like the NYC ball drop) in Downtown Miami.
The distance between Ft. Lauderdale north Miami is just 16 miles ( 25 km ) so it is about 15 min drive from Ft. Launderdale . Have funhttp://www.distance-calculator.co.uk/usa
To the person who said 15 minutes, that may be as the crow flies, but the crow doesn t have to worry about rush hour, etc. Depending on the time of day and traffic flow, if you take the expressway (and use the express lane), you would be lucky to do it in 30-40 minutes. In heavy traffic, or taking the coastal route (Collins Ave., etc.) you re talking an hour and probably more.
Depending on traffic and what roads you take (where in Miami you re going), it could take you anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and fifteen.
30minutes and more, depends what part of miami.
