Alohareviewing the shore excursions on your cruise while on the Big Island, there are many tours of Volcano s National Park that will show you amazing scenery and how lava has affected the landscape, but they will not likely take you near flowing lava. you MAY see some if you take the Circle of Fire Helicopter tour offered by your cruiseOtherwise, I would suggest taking an ocean tour of lava as it flows into the sea, many boat tours go to the location where lava is hitting the water and the site is very dramatic! You can likely book one through www.hawaiiactivities.com but it will not be connected to your cruise so you will be responsible for your own transfers to the tour and back to the ship
The name of the island is Hawaii. The city is Hilo. You don t see the molten lava because it crusts over and flows underneath the hard crust. It s not like the movies where it s flying all over the place. You can stand on the crust and you don t even realize that there is lava flowing beneath you. Don t go to near the ocean on the crust, it can break off easily.
The activity of the volcano changes almost weekly. At times it is possible to see lava flowing. But you need to do a substantial hike to get to a place where you can observe the flow. My daughter did it a few years ago when she went over to Hilo for a soccer tournament, and said it was marvelous. There are not any bus tours that can take you within range of viewing the active flows. If there is lava actively entering the ocean near HIlo, the cruise will almost certainly try to give you a night time view, which is something spectacular.
