I am moving there in January and I am wondering what the weather is like in the winter and the summer. I m a little excited because Ive heard there is a lot of snow in the winter, is that true? Also I snowboard and I was wondering if there are any ski/snowboard resorts around he area?
It is generally very cold in the winter (around 15-25 degrees F). In the summer it is warm, (75-90). I live in Boston, and there is A LOT of snow. There are LOTS of ski/snowboard resorts in the area (Waschuset is one of them).
I cannot get over all the Yahoo Answerers who always say there is a lot of snow in Boston each year. There is on average about 43 inches. More than New York, usually, sure, but only half and less of what falls just 50-60 miles north and northwest of the city; one quarter of what usually falls in central and northern New England. And a lot of the Boston snows change to rain, resulting in slushy glop. However, when Boston does get a good-sized snowstorm it can often be a whopper nor easter as storms can explode just south and southeast of Cape Cod where the cold Labrador Current and the warm Gulf Stream converge.
The big problem in answering the weather part of your question is the very zonal nature of the weather in this area. Boston s official measurements such as the 43 snowfall average are all taken at Logan Airport, which due to it s location and terrain is most heavily influenced by the harbor and the heat island effect. For example, Boston s average temperature in January is 35.6F, yet also on the coast, 13 Mi southeast in Hingham, the average is 27.5F. Boston s average annual precipitation is 42.5 vs Hingham s 49.8 . So even when it may be a cold rain in Boston itself, just a few miles can mean the difference and it could easily be snowing heavily right outside of or even within parts of the city. Wind direction is a BIG factor in New England s weatherPlenty of skiing/snowboarding not far to the north and west. If the web site is current then Mt. Wachusett Ski area will again be accessible via train: http://www.wachusett.com/TheMountain/Dir Another often overlooked asset for some quick, close by and cheap tune ups is Blue Hill http://www.ski-bluehills.com/Oh, Those of us just a few miles west of the city get our revenge though some days in May basking in 70+ degree sunshine while Bostonians suffer cloudy 40 s and 50 s thanks to the sea breeze . Despite some hot (90+F), humid or both spells, summers here are pretty much glorious! One thing you will learn about New Englanders is that we never agree on the weather.
There is roughly on average 3.5 inches of precipitation per month in the Boston area. Probably about 4-5 snow days for schools each year. Yep. Lots of snow. Way too much snow, in fact. It is extremely cold in New England in the winter. Summers are usually nice and warm. Large amounts of precipitation can occur at any time of year. The nearest skiing is in Mt Wachusett in Princeton and Nashoba Valley in Westford
It s chilly right now. There is a lot of snow in the winter!
