I live in Orange County, CA. I have a roommate that s just as ready to move out as me. We want to move to Huntington Beach in a 1BR or 2BR; which means average rent is $1200/month. Right now I have about $500 saved up and I m hoping to have $1500 to move out with in the next month and a half.I already know about and pay for: insurance, gas, cell phone, $100 rent/ month, storage, car payments, school- classes and materials. I am renting a storage unit right now to put all my stuff into so I won t have to buy much when I move all at once. I will take any tips on how to save money before I move out. and tips on how to continuing saving money while I m moved in. I would also appreciate any advice on what to do, buy, look for, etc. before moving out. Any cool corner-cutters you know about tell me!
I, will instead, remind you of your rights and responsibilities as a renter to keep you from being sued. If you and your roommate have signed a lease you can not leave before the lease terminates without the WRITTEN permission of the landlord / property management company. You MUST give your landlord at least a 30 day WRITTEN notification of your intentions to move. Keep copies of everything. You can be charged an additional months rent if ANYTHING is left in the apartment after the last day of the month you leave. . Take pictures of EVERY room, and demand a walk through inspection on the last day of occupancy to avoid charges for excessive cleaning fees. EVERYTHING to do with renting MUST be in writing. The courts will not accept oral promises or contracts. It MUST be in writing. (Keep this to yourself) Your landlord is required to send you a WRITTEN statement of any money withheld from your security deposit for cleaning within 30 days. And when you move in to the new place take pictures of every room again to note the condition the apartment was in when you moved in.
I definitely wouldn t recommend moving there since its really pricey, and especially if you re not sure you will definitely get a job there before you move because its location is really expensive. Look for places more inland, maybe even Riverside if you have to and live there for like a year and then move after you re sure you have enough saved up and can get a job in Huntington. Try other cities...cheaper
Put everything in Craigs list or do a yard sales. Save all the money you can, grab a bag of clothes and car key and go.
save as much money as possible, have a decent job for at least 6 months, good credit history, and at least 3 friends who will give you a good renters recommendation (as if they were past landlords).

The thing that struck me was that you are spending money on a storage unit. Wasting it, IMHO. Pup s right about the rental laws. If you want a REAL eye-opening experience, read the stuff in the rental and real estate forum here on Y!A. You would not believe how many people signed a lease without reading it, and just accepting all the conditions in the lease. $500 isn t going to be enough. We generally recommend saving $7500 before moving. In order to save that much, you ll have to give up the luxuries, like eating out whenever you want, or getting the double-latte at Starbucks every morning. In fact, pretend you already have rent, and you should be saving that $1200 per month. Are you making $3000 per month? If not, moving out is a recipe for disaster.
I ve never actually moved out of a place before, but i can help. Save money by moving some of the stuff you own yourself, preferrably the more important stuff (cell phone, money, jewelry, etc.). If the storage unit should be stolen or something else should go wrong with it, what you ve lost isn t as valuable as what you still have. Also, when you do the school supplies thing, it may be easier if you buy the less expensive brands, or if the stuff you want is on sale. For example, buy pens that come with more per pack or are less expensive. You ll save money. Of course, if you are required to bring supplies, don t try to get out of that. I can t think of much else. Hope this helps.
