Im planning on roadtripping from Victoria, BC, to Los Angeles California with 2 girlfriends in february. We have 9-11 days to get there and back. We re looking to save as much money as possible,a nd are even wiling to work for a day somewhere along the way if it could earn us some gas money!Any suggestions for cheap travel?OR any suggestions of places to see/stop/stay?Thanks!!
You will literally spend half your time driving here and back. It s a nice trip, and you should enjoy yourselves. Can t help too much with suggestions. I m not really that knowledgeable about what young girls would like to do. Just be aware that you cannot legally work in the U.S. without a work visa. (and you can t get one when you re simply here on holiday).
FWIW that s a lot of driving. It s about 10-11 hours from Portland to San Francisco, and I think it s about 8 hours from Vancouver to Portland. Add another 5-6 hours if you want to visit the LA area. So minimum two days of driving to get to get to the big destinations in CA and two more to get back. If you can find cheap plane fare and rent a car I d recommend that...Personal recommendations:Head to San Francisco. Wander around the city, visit the Marin Headlands, Mt Tamalpais and Muir Woods. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Go to Alcatraz (note get tickets in advance). Ride a cable car. Visit Golden Gate Park and the King Tut exhibit at the deYoung. From there you can head down to LA via the coast highway. Visit Santa Cruz (ride the Giant Dipper roller coaster at the boardwalk) go to Monterey and visit the Aquarium, Carmel and Pt Lobos. Drive through Big Sur and visit Hearst Castle (the fabulous mansion built by the guy Citizen Cane is based on). Go to Santa Barbara and then on to LA (wander around Malibu, Beverley Hills, Disneyland) then on to San Diego (Balboa Park, the SD Zoo, and the Gaslight District.) Wander across the border in Mexico. On the way back visit Yosemite national park.Just some suggestions--doing justice to that itinerary would probably take at least two weeks.Check out hostelworld.com or hostelbookers.com for youth hostels.
SoCal is my area of expertise, so I can t tell you much about anything north of San Francisco. These are fun places to check out: San FranciscoMonterey/CarmelHighway 1 through Big SurSan Simeon (Hearst Castle)Pismo BeachSolvangSanta BarbaraI-5 is MUCH faster than 101, but pretty boring. Kettleman City is the highlight of the drive (and yes, it s as boring as it sounds).
go via I-5 if its not snowing would be your best bet.. otherwise you ll be forced to take the coastal route via Oregon and Cali. it s a nice drive but because of the speed limits and encountered towns along the way it will take much longer
