I want to plan a ski trip with about 10 of my friends. I just moved here so I don t know which resort has the best deals, powder, lifts, rentals, etc.. Suggestions for lodging would be really appreciated as well.
This depends partly on your ability level and whether you ski or board. The north end of the lake has a better road in (I-80): * Northstar is OK for skiing, but not popular with snowboarders because it has flat stretches between the downhills. Mostly express lifts. It s owned by the same company as Sierra-at-Tahoe at the south end of the lake and some of the multi-day tickets work at both places.* Sugarbowl is good for better skiers and boarders. Mostly express lifts. Usually has some big jumps, depending on snowfall. You can usually get deals from Northern California grocery stores, etc.* Donner Ski Ranch is more a family experience, better for newbies.* Diamond Peak is terrible in all ways.Hwy 50 up to the south end of the lake is a 2-lane highway and can be very slow in bad weather. But the ski resorts are very close to the state line, so casinos and nightlife are right there.* Sierra-at-Tahoe. Same company as Northstar. Decent rental shop. Mostly express lifts. Very popular with snowboarders. Better than average lessons and beginner runs but also lots of intermediate runs. Best resort to go to in bad weather because its orientation protects it from the wind.* Heavenly. Half in CA and half in NV - its huge. The gondola takes you right to the casinos. OK for beginners, but really geared towards intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders. Most of the expert runs don t open until late in the season. Mostly express lifts, but sometimes high winds cause lifts to close. Tends to be more expensive.I prefer the south shore resorts. I don t go to north shore very often. In south shore, I recommend Sunrise Ski Rental (right on hwy 50 near the truck inspection in Myers) if you just want normal gear. Their prices are much better than at the resort. I recommend getting cable locks for you equipment because I have had my skis stolen more than once at more than one resort. I have stayed at Americana Village before in S. Lake Tahoe. It s old and funky but gets the job done. Sometimes you can get a deal at casino hotels... I think Montbleu and Harrahs are the nicest. Horizon is terrible. If you are willing to go to a time share sales pitch you can sometimes score some free nights at pretty posh time share condos... just be sure you can say NO to a pushy salesman.
Well if you are looking for a cheap place to stay I would check craigslist, or book a hotel at the best western. I would reccomend Northstar. Their prices are pretty expensive for a regular day though. I think the cheapest ski resort is boreal, which is more towards sacramento, and about 15 minutes from Truckee and Tahoe. Please let me know if you have any other questions, I have lived in the Truckee area for 20 years so know much about the area.
