You re in luck! I took a picture of the tourist marker on the Mackinaw City side of the bridge when I crossed there in October of 2005. The sign with these facts was made in 1982. Here s what it said: The Mackinac Bridge is the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world, with 7,400 feet of structure supported by graceful cables. Mighty Mac is an enginnering masterpiece, designed to withstand masses of crushing ice and winds up to 120 mph. It is also a construction triumph, built for $99,800,000 between 1954 and 1957, on time and within budget. The 4.5 million vehicles, which safely cross the bridge each year, pay tribute to its dedicated builders, who overcame the harsh winters and winds of the Straits. 3,800 foot main span - main towers stand 552 above water, made of steel plates, joined by 6 million rivets. Main suspension cables, 24 in diameter, spun of 12,876 wires each, total wire in cables is 42,000 miles Suspended structure erected in 120 long pre-fab trusses. Roadway at center is 199 above water, with 155 underclearance for ships Massive concrete foundations rest on bedrock up to 206 below water. 750,000 tons of concrete and steel lie submerged. Crossing is 4 miles of water, 295 deep at mid-span, where a post-glacial river carved a gorge 9,500 years ago. I took about 10 digital pictures - send me your email address if you d like me to send you copies. It is an amazing bridge - a little scary crossing it when it s windy as the bridge has the tendency to sway in the wind.
It is a suspension bridge. Here s a website also, that might help with your project, that is if you haven t seen it already!Hope this helps!
