I plan on going to the US next year, but I must save as much as possible. Can one live on $50 a week? -

So, I have decided that I want to go and work as an Au Pair in the USA next year... The main reason being so that I can finance my first year of tertiary. I will be paid weekly, but I have to save as much as humanly possible. Considering that I will receive full bord and lodging, will I be able to do what I must with $50 a week? Please give me advise, as I dont know the basic cost of living in the US...

The others have pretty much covered everything, but you need to decide on which city you are going to, and then return to ask this question. As long as food and shelter are accounted for, you probably could just squeak by. It depends on the city, as some cities, you would use a great deal of money, just getting around., if you have no car. If you do, thats another expense. Car insurance can vary quite a great deal between cities, with lots of driving and little driving. Speaking of insurance, does your employer make any contribution to your health insurance ?Medical costs are sky high in the US. This is why health care is a main issue here now. What would happen if you were in an accident or got sick..find out if youre covered in some way. Years ago, being your young age, it wouldnt be an issue. But now with those nasty viruses going around, you need to think on it.

My friend just had some heart tests and now owes $10,000Health care is just insane...even with insurance ( which costs a LOT) you still pay a lot. Report Abuse

It depends on where in the US you go. It s a huge country and the cost of living varies. In California or New York, obviously the cost of living is very high. In any big city, it will be higher than if you are in nowhereville. But even if the employer will pay for all of your food, you will need sundry items and transportation, I think it would be difficult to live on $50. Since they are providing food and lodging, the wage will be barely livable but I wouldn t plan on being able to get by on $50 a week, at least not every week.

Housing is your biggest expense and you have that covered. Food is covered too, so that s one less thing to worry about. Does you employer offer health insurance? Transportation and entertainment are variable, you can spend as much or as little as you want. $50 per week is tight, but maybe you can do it with room and board provided.

Depending upon your life style sure. Although it depends on where your live and if or not you want to do anything outside your job. You could go to a movie and out for fast food and buy a book and then you d be out of money.

got a work visa?

Well if you have your lodging taken care of that is the biggest cost here. Depending on which part of the states you are going to, it would be possible to live on $50 a week. If you own a car it would not be possible though. A car here would cost you that much in gas let alone insurance. But if you live conservatively and can arrange your travel to be paid for, yes you could live on $50 per week. A weeks groceries for one can easily be done if you eat healthy and stay away from the junk food for about $25 per week, then public transportation here can vary a lot depending on area. some areas even have free public transportation because it is part of the taxes, but most places charge. for example you can get a monthly pass here in Portland, OR for $125, someone may correct me on this since the rates changed recently, they were $75 per month but they had a big increase about a year ago, But you can get all over the city and surrounding areas on that pass. Check with where you are going to find out about transportation ahead of time. Food can vary greatly in price as well, even from store to store, stay away from the small convenience stores like Circle K or 7-11 they will charge 5 times what the super markets will for the same thing. It is possible to live cheap in America but most people get caught up in their wants and want more than they need. which is the big expense in America. Remember, this is not a democracy anymore, it is a capitalist country which lures people into slavery.
