Don t worry Oahuans I already know I have to get out of waikiki, we are going to hit up other beaches too. But we will be staying on waikiki so we have one day that we will be going to waikiki beach. What to do there though?
Waikiki is a fun, exciting place! Yes, the isolated, serene beaches on the rest of Oahu and the other islands are beautiful, but there is a reason why many people start and end their trip here and why most resorts are located here: It s a fun, tropical urban beach environment that is like no where else in Hawaii. Think Rio de Janeiro or South Beach, Miami .* The City of Honolulu sponsors free hula shows near Duke s statue (ask around, everyone knows where it is), I believe 3-4 times a week right now. The performers are NOT just low-caliber dancers, these are serious hula schools (called halaus ) and if you like it, they change the performers each time so they are never the same.http://www.govisithawaii.com/2007/12/13/* If you are there on a Friday, the Hilton Hawaiian Village has free fireworks on the beach, usually about 8PM or so. Hopefully, you will have a chance to walk down the main street (Kalakaua Avenue) on a Friday or Saturday night when everyone is here, along with street artists and locals.* It is a tourist shopping arcade now, but you should at least check out the International Marketplace once, on the east side of Waikiki (near the Westin Moana and Hyatt). The real banyan tree with multiple trunks is amazing. If you decide to buy from one of the shops here, bargain like crazy.* If I were to choose one place to eat in Waikiki and it was my first time, I would choose Duke shttp://www.dukeswaikiki.com/* Waikiki is the PERFECT place to learn to surf...the waves come in low and consistently without breaking, and there is a nice, sandy bottom if you wipe out . Your hotel concierge will probably recommend one of two or three large surfing schools on the island, the main one being Hans Hedemann Surfing School.http://www.hhsurf.com/hh/* On the far east side of Waikiki is Kapiolani Park, with its zoo and aquarium. An outdoor venue, the Waikiki Shell is also located there, and is a fun place to see a concert. And beyond Kapiolani Park is the very edge of Waikiki in the Gold Coast area (right under Diamond Head) which is primarily residential. There is great snorkeling here, as well as a romantic restaurant called the Hau Tree Lanai which has a terrace right on the beach. The most reliable place to rent snorkel equipment (don t buy cheap equipment on-the-spot, you will regret it if it does not fit snugly and leaks water) is Snorkel Bob s which rents by the day or week.http://www.snorkelbob.com/cgi-local/Soft* If you want to do a luau in Waikiki, most people will tell you that the Royal Hawaiian (the grand dame of historic Waikiki resorts) has the best one, you need to book it in advance. For the best hula, have dinner at the House Without A Key at the 5-star Halekulani Resort (near Trump Tower) to see Kanoe (kah-no-ay) Miller perform it (she was a former Miss Hawaii). And finally, there are a variety of nightclubs and dinner shows you can spend additional $$$ at if you want, ask your concierge who is headlining or look in one of the free weekly tourist publications you will see everywhere.* Besides the Ala Moana Shopping Center which is adjacent to Waikiki on the west side past the Hilton Hawaiian Village and Ilikai, there is a lot of international $$$$$ which drops a lot of bucks for designer items in Waikiki, and prices in this area are really geared to them. You will see the shops (Gucci, Prada, Hermes, Ferragamo, duty-free, etc.) both in the shopping center fronting the Royal Hawaiian, as well as along Kalakaua s west side near Trump Tower. For reasonable shopping, I think most locals will agree Ala Moana Shopping Center is a better buy.P.S.- Don t forget to sit on the beach ;-)
I recommend taking a catamaran ride. The cats pull right up onto the beach and the people who work on them will announce that they re leaving again in a half hour (or whatever). It s usually about $20 and lasts an hour. They re really fun! I live on Kauai and visit Oahu frequently, but I always take a catamaran ride with my son when we re there. You ll love it!ETA: I tried to email you back but can t for some reason. The catamarans pull right up onto Waikiki Beach near the Royal Hawaiian (pink hotel) and the Moana Surfrider next door. You don t have to go across town for that. :) They re right there! And if you re sitting on the beach, you ll see the cats when they re out sailing. Waikiki Beach itself is long but very narrow (i.e., not far from the sidewalk to the water), so you really can t miss them. They don t go out in high winds or when the water is rough, so hopefully you ll have some nice, calm days while you re visiting. Two of the catamarans names that I remember are Maitai (which I believe is blue and white) and Na Hoku, which is red and yellow. You REALLY can t miss them...don t worry! Have a great trip!
I really love waikiki - not only for the beach but the amazing people watching, you will find folk there from all over the world!Check out the webcam at the Duke Kohanamoku statue Waikiki is a great place to learn to surf with a safe and gentle break - also good for body boardingYou can get in a bit of snorkeling in some areasThere are movies on the beach a few nights a week, free hula a few nights a week and fireworks on fridaysEvery night there is a torch lighting ceremony that is cool to seeJust down the beach is the Waikiki AquariumAgain, I love waikiki and can easily spend a day there sunrise to sundown before I continue my exploration of the amazing island of Oahu =)Aloha!
Try this restaurant at the Pacific beach hotel. You can watch them dive in a large indoor ocean tank and feed the fish while you are eating. Make your reservations for about 6-615pm, I think they dive in the tank about 6:30pm. See web site for info.http://www.pacificbeachhotel.com/?/Dinin
