Why was Baltimore nicknamed the quot;Charm Cityquot;? Was there irony in that name? -

After seeing The Wire I wondered.

That is a tourism slogan created in the 70s to attract more visitors. If you want more details, you can contact the people at the Visit Baltimore site that is the official tourism organization:http://baltimore.org/contact-bacva

Cold, rainy states...? -

Seattle, Washington.

What is the family section at the philadelphia flyers games? -

me and my friends want to go to the flyers game, but i dont want to be surrounded by 5 year olds. wh

uh...i don t know what the first guy is talking about...There really isn t any particular section there, but there are bars and whatnot inside . I know it s not the same as sitting out on the ice and watching, but truth is, I think those games are nothing BUT families. I think Flyers fans are the best fans in Philly...you can hear a mouse piss on cotton in that place while the game is happening because everyone is so focused on the ice. Once inside, you can probably move around a bit, and maybe even find an usher and explain your situation. If you re honest with them and not an ***, I think they d understand. The last time I went, I felt like I was in school the way I had to watch my mouth, but like I said, if you explain this to someone, I don t think they d have any problem helping you find a better spot. It s for the chillren!

No one in their right mind would take young children to a Flyers game. No need to worry.

I am traveling from Modesto to LA airport, where does it snow on my route? -

I will be driving on Monday night from Modesto, CA near Stockton, CA to Los Angeles, CA to the airport. I can either take 99S and then take I5 when they meet after passing Bakersfield, or I can take I5S from the very beginning. I am afraid that the road conditions will be very bad or that they will be closed due to snow. I cannot look up the wheater or driving conditions, because I don t know exactly where it snows. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I 5 thru the grapevine... Remember: If its raining in Los angeles or Bakersfield ... IT S SNOWING over the grapevine.. AND USUALLY the CHP closes the road until the storm passes and the Ice and snow melts/

There is no snow on either of those routes. It only snows in the mountains. There are mountains along the coast that sometimes get some snow, but not much, and it doesn t stay on the ground long. The real snow is in the Sierras, way to the east of where you re going. This time of year we get some rain, but even that is usually not serious. Both I5 and 99 go through the central valley, where it snows for a few minutes once in 25 years. The only place you -might- see snow is north of Los Angeles, in the low hills that are the northern boundary of the Los Angeles Basin. And even that is unlikely.

As others have said the only place you may encounter snow is crossing the Grapevine (between Bakersfield, and Los Angeles) I would suggest that just prior to departing you call the toll free 24 hour Caltrans Road Condition hot line at 1-800-427-6723. It will give you the most up to date road conditions. Then call again as you pass Bakersfield. Plan on a roughly 6 hour drive going the speed limit. If by chance I-5 is closed over the Grapevine you can always detour east in Hwy 58 to Mojave, then south on Hwy 14.

The road does close due to weather conditions at the Grapevine. This is between Bakersfield and Santa Clarita Valley. With today s rain you are also very likely to hit major areas of fog.My brother lives in Turlock and the I live in LA. I ve done both I-99 and I-5 drives. I think the 99 is MUCH better. Because it s mostly a 3 lane road instead of the 2 lanes and you are rarely completely in the middle of no where. My brother thinks the 5 is better - because you miss all the towns and he thinks it s faster. It s not - I ve done both ways and it s almost exactly the same.If you are picking someone up or need to fly out, it would be a lot safer this weekend if you flew instead. You can fly from Sacramento, Merced, San Jose, Oakland, etc.Be safe!!

Doesn t matter which one you start on, the 5 and 99 merge. No danger of snow until you get close to the grapevine . If you look at the caltrans site (http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi) and type in 5 , it will give you the current road conditions. You want to look for grapevine , Gorman , Tejon Pass , or Castaic . Here is a sample I just copied: A HIGH WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 MI NORTH OF THE JCT OF SR 126 /AT LAKE HUGHES ROAD/ (LOS ANGELES CO) TO THE LOS ANGELES/KERN CO LINE /THE GRAPEVINE/ - TRAVEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CAMPERS, TRAILERS OR PERMIT LOADS So that tells you the road is open, but there are high winds. If snow chains are required, it will say so.

The only BAD place is the Grapevine. Its was closed earlier this week with black ice. Check with the CHP about road conditions. Any big storm could close the Grapevine.

The elevation changes after the 5 and 99 merge.

Is Arcadia Ca. a good place to live? -

My husband and I live in Canyon Country Ca. with our almost 2 year old. We need to relocate closer to Santa Fe Springs Ca. We saw that Arcadia Ca. is in the middle and were wondering if it is a good safe place to live and raise a family. My husband travels for work and I am home alone often so safety is a major priority. Also how are the schools?

Arcadia is a very safe city and its schools are great. Arcadia is an upper class city with many million dollar homes, so with this you have less crime, and better schools. The further south you go in Arcadia, the less expensive it is. I really can t say anything negative about the city of Arcadia.

I agree with my previous poster, Arcadia is a good safe place to live and raise family. This is the impression I had the short period of time I lived in El Monte, anytime I was driving through Arcadia and take a quick look at those precious mansions I had the feeling I was in Beverly Hills.

Arcadia is very nice. I spent sometime in San Marino about four miles away and the whole area was very upscale and safe, plus you are very close to The Great Race Place , Santa Anita and Cal Tech Pasadena. Maybe your two year old will go there in 16 years and save the world.

Arcadia is GREAT. Just check out the stats at lalife.com. You can see about safety, price, and schools.

Has anyone been to SURU store in LA? -

What s it like?

A very interesting store....with cool designs on stuff...You should definitely check it out....It s very hard to classify it....other than to say it s expensive...

Just another artsy-fartsy store on Melrose. Not really my style. When I need to purchase something, I don t go shopping, I go hunting. Boutiques on Melrose aren t my style at all.Just wondering: If I said anything really negative about it, would it keep you from going? Or if I d said you can t miss, would you drive down today? You can Google SURU Store Melrose , and see some nice reviews and pictures.

you can always go yourself and find out first hand,.

Fun places in San Francisco? -

Hey guys,My friend s bday is coming up and I want to take her somewhere fun in San Francisco. Any ideas ? She likes salsa dancing, and she also likes chocolate cake ;-) and sushi !!! But for real, any fun places in SF that we can go, something with a good view ? It can be a restaurant/club or something silly and crazy. I am going to take her to Steps of Rome where the servers give a lap dance but is there anything crazier and fun that we can do ? I want to surprise her ! Thanks !!!!

I used to live in SF, there is a good sushi place called Blue Fin Tuna and another cheaper one called Kitaro. If you want a good view, the Cliff House is right on the ocean, its pretty cool there.Good luck and have fun.

We think Empress of China is superb for a special occasion as it is roof top dining with a great view and wonderful food choices. Another favorite is the Franciscan on the Wharf overlooking the bay, bridge, etc. Neither are crazy but excellent choices for treating someone special. At least they are our ideas of fun .

Of course there are fun places in San Francisco you can discover.http://www.flickr.com/photos/uiclondon/4071071417/in/photostream/

Nicest place to live in Seattle? -

I am planning to attend graduate school at the University of Washington next fall. I am from southern California so I don t know the area at all. I will be moving to Seattle in a couple months and I am looking for an apartment. I want something close to the university but I don t want to live in an apartment building aimed at young college students. Preferably between $1100 and $1600 possibly cheaper as long as its nice. I want at least a 1 bedroom. Nice views. Animal friendly. I would like a park nearby so I can go running. I don t even know where to start looking. Since I am having to do most of my apartment hunting online I need some help deciding. I have a trip planned for next month to look at some apartments but I need to narrow down the best places to live. Please help.

You can get a place near the UW that ll fit the bill for reasonably cheap, but I think most of what you re going to find around there is going to be geared at college students, who are by-and-large, young.I lived in Maple Leaf, which is North of the U District; it was nice, but dull - very suburban and family-oriented, and not really what I or my friend/roommate were looking for as mid/late 20 s single students. Ravenna, which is more or less adjacent to the U district, is probably a good halfway point, though there are few luxury apartments there (the prices you re talking about for a 1-bedroom would be in the high-end for Seattle). I moved back down to CA and she s staying up there; now she lives in Eastlake, which is just south over the bridge from the U District, and she pays $900 for a vintage, 1920 s studio with hardwood floors and a view of the skyline. Most of the people in her building are grad or postgrad, mid 20 s to mid 30 s.

Fremont is very close to the UW, has several high-end apartment buildings and townhomes, a running trail right along the water, a nice selection of restaurants, and a great Sunday public market.

University District is right by UW.

Should I take a job in San Francisco if I live in San Jose and cannot get a job here? -

Will the commute make my life hell? I ve heard that I could take 280 instead of the 101 and it should be less crowded.

If you must drive, always use Interstate 280 instead of U.S. 101 or - even worse - Interstate 880.But I wouldn t bother with it at all.San Francisco has an excellent bus, subway, and tram system. And Caltrain provides commuter rail service between San Jose and San Francisco. The trains are actually very comfortable. There are bike racks, restrooms, tables, and electrical sockets on the train. Caltrain also has an open container policy that allows you to bring drinks aboard. During the morning and evening commute, express trains do the run in 57 minutes. Regular trains will take around 1 hour 30 minutes.Grab some fast food, get a newspaper, sit down, relax, and enjoy the ride. http://www.caltrain.com/

If you can get to Cal Train that is a lot easier depending where you live and where the job is. But most people have to drive and take 101. Again that depends on where you live, assuming your job will be downtown S.F. If you get a job in the Sunset or Richmond, or western part of town, you can take 280 all the way in. There are express Cal Trains in the rush hour also. 101 Northbound traffic from San Jose to S.F. is pretty bad, and the reverse in the P.M. is bad too.But thats how it goes.

Yes, take the job. Traditional commute will hang you up on 101. 280 is less crowded past Los Altos / Palo Alto to about Daly city, but congestion is dominant everywhere else. With some logistical smarts and planning ahead, getting around the crunch wont be and issue.Check out http://www.511.org

Regardless of which mode of transportation you choose, the commute from San Jose to San Francisco is bound to suck. That said, it s a tough job market and for now having a lousy commute is much preferable to not having a job.

I would take the job, what ever income you can get is good, its better than nothing!

Of Course!Good Luck there, have a gooooood life ;)

Take the job, but do not drive. Take the train.

I have a question about Pikes Peak...? -

I will be in Colorado Springs in the middle of March. I want to know if the road to the summit is typically open then. Please only respond if you really know if it s usually open that early in the season.

The road to the summit of Pike s Peak is open year-round weather permitting. So if you get good weather in March, you can drive to the top. I ve visited Pike s Peak several times and have been there in the summer, spring, and winter. I was fortunate enough to make it to the top each time. Make sure you dress warm because it s going to much colder at the top.

Yea, its always going to be open, but whether its open to the top is the question that nobody can answer. It depends on the weather- sometimes its windy or snowy, and they close it down to about 12,000 feet, sometimes its open- theres not a single answer to that. Ive been up there twice, once it was open (june), once it was open to 12,000 feet due to high winds (december) but not due to snow. Its like the weather in Colorado- never know!

Do you go there alone?Whats at the top?

New year in las vegas? -

Yes and the fireworks are back. LV Review journal on line edition or vegas.com will give you any updates. It is wild here. Enjoy, come and see us.

I lived in LV for 6 years and I never went to the strip for NYE. Too cold, to many people and too dangerous. Not to scare anyone but last year the authorities were on alert for possible terrist attack. I rather stay safe and warm and have a party at home instead. But that s just me.

Flew into Las Vegas one year for New Years. I cannot say that it was much different from any other night in Vegas. All in all though I think it is an enjoyable place to spend the holiday.

A great place to celebrate NYE. The Strip is closed and there are fireworks at midnight, just like NY Times Square. The issue is getting your room reservation and the restaurants and shows you want before they are all booked

Fun place to be New Years Eve.

I ve lived here my whole life. New Years is crazy, crowded, and dangerous. lol.

Yes, there will be a new year in Las Vegas.

Early check in at JFK hotels? -

My flight from Australia is arriving at JFK airport at 6am and I want to go straight to my hotel after such a long flight. Does anyone know of any hotels around the JFK/Queens area that does allow early check ins? I don t mind paying that bit extra for it.

I ll sometimes pay for the night before with a guaranteed arrival (that s what they call it here), so the room is there when I arrive. Otherwise, it s 3 or 4pm local time before you can check in.It will cost you more that a bit , but the sleep is usually worth it.

It s haunted o_o

How long from Los ANgeles to Honolulu? -

how long is the plane trip Via United Airlines fromLos angeles, Califto Honolulu ?

Average of about 5 1/2 hours give or take for weather conditions over the Pacific Ocean.

Flight from LA to Honolulu will range from 5 1/2 to 6 hours - much better than when I travel there from the Midwest (think 11 hours) =)If you need any help finding a flight let me know

Roughly 5 hours. You usually get a good tail wind coming to the islands so they may say it takes anywhere from 5 1/2 to 6 but its usually around 5.

Around 5 hours.

If I wanted to move to Canada from the United States, list everything I would have to do? -

First you have to apply for residency with the Canadian government (costs around $1000). Then when you move you have to prove that you have enough money to sustain yourself and not be a burden on their system (a single person is required to have $10,833 CDN while a family of four is reqired to have $20,130 CDN).Here is a link to Citizenship and Immigration Canada which will show you your options and the costs involved.http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/i

Denver airport consperisy? -

Ok so i was watching a video on youtube about this,And if you have do you think is creepy as a mother! I think you need to stop watching YouTube. There are a lot of misguided people with too much time on their hands. This is just some folks with an overactive imagination. I took an extensive tour of DIA before it was open while it was being built, and this is total balderdash. Or horse pucky which ever you prefer.

THere is alot of stupid stuff on youtube.

Could I connect easily in NYC? -

I was born and raised in Minneapolis / Saint Paul, Minnesota. I grew up with Nice Guy syndrome, probably fairly common in the midwest. I m overcoming that syndrome right now in adulthood, I m almost 26. I ve never been to the east coast.Relatively few people in Minnesota are very direct with you, which is pretty inconvenient. Do people in big cities along the east coast tend to have higher expectations from people? I ve grown pretty confident at this point in my life. I m not a pushover anymore, I know I wouldn t take any crap from people it s just connecting with people that might be an issue.

You wrote, Could I connect easily in NYC? No.NYers are notoriously distant and stand-offish and cautious and wary with strangers, especially chatty ones with Nice Guy Syndrome, sorry. We re actually very friendly when we re properly introduced to someone, but we are VERY cautious and distant with strangers.Good luck, and the link below is to a webpage about how NYers may sometimes SEEM rude when we really aren t at all...

Stay in Minneapolis..... Mr Nice Guy Syndrome few people in Minnesota are very direct with you higher expectations connecting with people What are you talking about? You sound like a very insecure person.

Well I don t really understand what do u mean. But people in NYC do communicate a lot, but only if u know them. If u try to start to talk with people and they r nice. There r all kinds of people in NYC, the kind, and the mean. Good luck!

What do you know about Famp;D Rentals? -

i applied for some job and i get responce that this job is gone but i may be interesting working with F D Rentals company. somebody knows anything about this Company?? How they works?

i got this too..its a scam...if you read it it says something about putting their money into your own bank account to wait for their checks to clear..xx

I had the exact same thing today, replying for a job listing in the Woking area for Bar and Waiting staff. Got a very late response (someone replying for home perhaps?) informing me that the vacancy had already been filled and that they believed I d be interested in the F D rental position. As you can see, it raised my hackles and I m now pretty convinced this is a scam, not least because the F D rental thing has absolutely nothing to do with the original position applied for.I hope others who get this are similarly wary.Anyone who can share some light though as to the legitimacy of the F D rental job, your input would be appreciated. Jonnyx

I have been emailed as well and check is correctly spelt cheque that is the 1st worry second is the personal details, to me its a scam and that is what I email back-always.

I ve been searching this company and this is what I ve found:http://www.manta.com/coms2/dnbcompany_gm

I have been a job from F D aswell....can u tell me have u received checks from them????

What do they have in the burton store in chicago? -

do they just have snowboards? or do they also have clothes, belts, etc.

I ve been to the Burton store in Orlando, FL and Wrentham, Massachusetts. Both stores carried just about everything Burton makes. Bags, boots, clothing, street wear, Analog, Anon, outerwear, you name it they had it.
