Why do people call New York City the big apple? -

They call it the big apple because everyone likes New York City just like an apple, and an apple is a very juicy fruit that everyone can have, just like how New York City holds alot of opportunities that everyone can have. The more bigger the apple the more sweetness and juices it has, just like how New York City has alot of opportunities, that s why NYC is so populated because there are alot of chances to start a new life.

New York state was once known for growing apples so in the 1920 s actors and musicians called it the apple . When they played NYC they called it playing The Big Apple. The name was mostly forgotten until the 1970 s when the city was trying to change it s image and readopted the old name.

If you were to visit the corner of West 54th Street and Broadway in New York City, youd be at Big Apple Corner. That is because the man who coined the phrase, The Big Apple, John Fitzgerald, lived there for 30 years.

The link below explains everything you need to know on why NYC is referred to as the Big Apple.Good luckNative New Yorker

The apple is the forbidden fruit, the apple of temptation. New York is big on everything including temptation.

Because new york state is the apple state.NY state is famous for their apples. and since NYC is one of the biggest cities its the big apple.

Because an apple is a 4 side thing, and NY has water on both sides. Well Manhattan does.

It has to do with horse racing.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Apple

Because eventually it will rot from the inside and cave in on itself.

because there was a very big appple at one point

because apples are good ha

I want to travel to usa? -

i want to travel to usa do i need a visa ? if so how can i get one...im from englandi have a criminal record wich aint too bad but aint too good if this mattersplease explain to me how to go about doin this

Since you have a criminal record, you cannot travel to the U.S. under the visa waiver program. You may or may not qualify for a visa. See sites below.

For up to six months of visit, you do not need a visa to enter USA. I am from Japan and been living in USA for 35 years now, whenever my folks come for a visit to USA, they do not have any visa. They of course visit for only 2 weeks.

Orlando, FL questions....? -

I visited Florida in May 2009. Went from Orlando all the way to Miami, to Daytona Beach. Literally the whole 6 days I was there it rained all day every day, except for the first day. I have to say that Florida is a beautiful place to visit and inspite of the rain I had a great time, BUT I would love to go back and be able to lay on the nice sunny, warm, beaches! When is the best time to visit vacation in Florida? Prob. the Orlando area...hit up all the parks as well ;)Was May 09 a typical Florida May?

You must have been there the same time as us! We were at Disney from May 16-24 and had a miserable time because of the rain. The Orlando Sentinel stated May s relentless downpours saw rain levels hit 13.9 inches -- more than 10 inches above normal -- for that month. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2009 That was not a typical May... in fact we went to Disney in May 07 (a week earlier) and had beautiful weather. It was perfect for swimming and sunbathing and it only rained one night the whole time we were there... and that was after the parks were closed for the night. Give May another shot. Oct-May are the dryest months of the year, and when you head to Florida in the summer you have to deal with humidity, too. Maybe try April or May next time. The weather is starting to warm up and there shouldn t be a lot of rainfall... normally

Great Question! I travel often to Florida and can honestly say that I prefer January - Middle of March. Jan Feb are Off-Peak Seasons which means they are less crowded if you re interested in hitting up the theme parks and enjoying mildly warm weather. Many families travel to Florida this time of year for budget friendly getaways, during the off season.May is another great month if you re looking for HOT weather and its right before their rain season which starts in June. Does California have a bad reputation? -

I have heard that CA has a rather negative image. What do you think?

There is no blanket perception of california. there are so many different types of people, places, issues...everyone is going to think of CA in a different way. whether it be good or bad. sure ca has more issues than most states, but that s because EVERYONE wants to live here! it is by far the most populous state in the nation. sorry i m being a little biased but i really think that.

People have two different images of California:1. It s this beautiful place where beautiful people live and celebrities are just roaming around all over the place.and2. It s this ghetto, filled with lots of violence. People are killing and shooting each other every night. In reality, it s neither. It s just a place where regular folks live their regular lives just like anywhere else in the US.

It depends on who you ask. California has a lot of great aspects, ranging from its beautiful landscapes to its trend-setting ways on social issues. But it also has a lot of problems largely having to do with its large population. The state always has money problems - even in good years. There are a lot of very rich people and a lot of very poor people. Some other states do not like California because they think it uses an unfair proportion of natural resources (Oregon and Arizona especially think this). Other states don t like California because they feel like it imposes its political ideas on them (for example, if California requires improved fuel economy on cars, then the manufacturers are more likely to make more fuel efficient cars for the whole country because they don t want to make different cars just for one state - its not that other states don t want more efficient cars, they just don t want California making that decision for them.)

Well most places have both a positive and negative image... California s reasons are... traffic... smog... gangs... just basic crime (murder, drugs, etc...) ... the illegal immigrant population (to some this is bad)... California also tends to be very liberal and a lot of people don t (or didn t at least) like that... plus crazy celebrities give normal Californians a bad name... and of course... jealousy for the beautiful scenery and weather! ;)

Whats the best clothing to wear while hiking in the Mountains? -

Whats the best clothing to wear while hiking in the Mountains?

Gortex speedo always works for me :-)

Always wear hiking boots with cushioned socks. They will keep your feet well cushioned and protected from the elements. I usually wear light weight shorts because we hike in the summertime, but if you are hiking during winter or on a route that has not been cleared you should think about wearing long pants (sweats or jeans). You can always wear long johns or leggings underneath if it is cold. You also should remember to layer your clothes when hiking. Start with a short sleeve shirt or cotton tank top and then add a second thicker layer (long or short sleeve) and always keep a jacket with you. Light weight is of course ideal but remember to pack appropriately for the season. Lastly, it is wise to bring a hat (preferably with a wide brim) along the trail. This can serve as a protection from sun and rain.

It depends on the time of year as was already said, but then it also depends on what mountains. Layers are always good, a hat is good, sunscreen is good, a day pack and lots of water are good.

It depends on the time of year.

A jet pack.
