NYC Macys Thanksgiving day parade -- first time going w/ toddler!? -

We are going to venture into the city for the Thanksgiving day parade for the first time. It will be my husband, myself and our almost 2 year old daughter. Any tips on where to park (cheapest), where to stand (best view, least crowd) or etc would be GREATLY appreciated. I ve been told that it is best to stand inside a store, but I wouldn t even know which or where or how. Plus I don t think our daughter will pay attention if we re indoors. We re fine to brave the cold (we ve relocated here from a colder climate), preferably we like to find bleacher seats, but I don t know if they do those here. Thanks in advance for your help! :)

First of all, driving and parking the City will be out of the question. You will be stuck in traffic and many of the major street will be closed for the parade. There is also a holiday girdlock alert in the City until December 23rd. If you don t believe, me check the link below.http://nativenewyorker10454.blogspot.comMy advice is parking your car outside of the City and take the train into town. If you re coming from Upstate or New England, you can park at one of the many parking garages on the Metro-North commuter trains lines and take the train to Grand Central. Below is a list of large parking garages on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines.New Haven Line-----------------------New Haven-Union StationBridgeportStamfordRye (free parking on weekends and holidays)Larchmont (free parking on weekends and holidays)New RochelleMount Vernon EastHarlem Line-------------------White PlainsHudson Line------------------PoughkeepsieCroton HarmonIf you re coming from points south and west, you can park your car at one of the many park garages in both Jersey City or Hoboken, NJ and take the PATH train into the City. The links below shows the location of parking garages in both cities that near PATH train station.Grove Street Stationhttp://maps.google.com/maps?near=Grove+SExchange Place Stationhttp://maps.google.com/maps?near=ExchangPavonia/Newport Stationhttp://maps.google.com/maps?near=PavoniaHoboken Stationhttp://maps.google.com/maps?near=HobokenJournal SquareParking is available at the Journal Square Transportation Center on two decks through a privately owned parking facility, LAZ Parking. For additional information, please call (201) 216-6744.If you re coming from Long Island, you can park your car on of the may parking garages on the LIRR commuter train lines and take the train into the City.Second, in regards to finding the best place to view the parade. The best I would recommend will be along Central Park West from 81st Street to Central Park South, and along 7th Avenue from Central Park South to Times Square. Stores along the parade route will be close on Thanksgiving, therefore you will have to stand on the sidewalk. If you re looking for a place to sit, you might want to head down to the end of the parade route at 34th Street and Broadway, which is in front of the Macy s flagship store. Eitherwise, its standing room only along the parade route. Please note, this years parade route has been change. The link below show the new route for 2009.Good luckNative New Yorker

I normally disagree with Native New Yorker when he constantly tells people to park outside of the city and take the train in because I think it s totally unnecessary, but Thanksgiving is the ONE DAY of the year on which I agree with him, so, yes, park outside of NYC and get a train or a bus into town. You can stand anywhere along the route (see link, below), but don t try to stand in a store, they probably won t let you, and, frankly, it s NOT the best view at all. Some folks claim that it s better to stand near where the parade has to make a turn because it has to slow down to do so, but I doubt there s that much of a difference really, and the bleacher seats are not available to regular folks, I think they re for VIPs and you have to be invited to sit in them, sorry.Good luck, have fun, and the link below is to a webpage about the parade with a map of the route...

I need to rent a car around LA airport, I have a debit card and dont want to leave an extra deposit? -

Around here in Massachusetts. I can go rent a car and pay the rental fee and drive away. I have a debit card not a credit card. A lot of car rental places want an additional deposit if you don t have a credit card. Anyone know of someplace I can rent inexpensive and no extra deposit around LAX

have you consider using public transit instead?it may take longer but at least tehy wont hold your debit card hostage!

Sorry, that s the way it is around here. Credit card is generally required, otherwise they put this HUGE hold on your account (varies from company to company), for DAYS, which screws up your life.See, around here, you NEED a car. And so they got you where they want you.-------Note that Alex is a spammer. He just posts that same address on all his answers, and probably benefits if you click on the link. They ll still put a hold on your account.I ve always found Enterprise to be pretty good.

i know the PERFECT place! Their prices are very fair and there is free pick up and drop off from/to LAX!!http://www.laxcarrentallosangeles.com/ Definitely check them out! I hope this helps

Whats the best way to get from White Plains (NY) to the (Bronx), the zoo in particular.? -

No cars, and perfably no Taxi s.

Have you checked out Metro-North? I m not sure if there s a stop in the Bronx, but it s a good place to start.

Is mango street a real place in chicago? -

I am familiar only with the small street called Mango Avenue (NOT Mango Street, which I understand is fictional).I m a big Sandra Cisneros fan and understand that the setting for The House on Mango Street takes place in an imaginary neighborhood based either or both on Pilsen and/or Humboldt Park/Wicker Park in Chicago. Mango Avenue does not run through either of these actual neighborhoods.I also suspect she chose that title in part because of the fun alliteration when you translate it to Spanish.

There s no Mango Street in Chicago.

There s a North Mango Avenue, but no Mango Street.

It sure is, it s in Pilsen. I have a friend who used to live on mango street!

Yes. Its a small one way street though

Yes, It is far west but is an avenue between Central and Austin Blvd at 5750 west. It runs on and off from North Avenue to Galewood Park, Aemitage to Belmont, Irving Park Rd to Berteau, Montrose to Sunnyside, Grover to Avondale, and Catalpa to Elston. The setting of the book did not take place there however even though the author is from Chicago.

Cheapest and safest place to live in brooklyn ? -

considering moving to broooklyn , but wheres the cheapest place to rent an apartment ? and where is the safest place in brooklyn ?

the cheapest is i think Bed Stuyvesantt... but it s bad because it has a lot of bad things . but the good part is the Jewish section. Well since Brooklyn is becoming nice, as in new buildings, and the rich moving in... it s hard to find a cheap one. I lived in Kingshighway and since i live in nj now idk much about the price. but the really good areas are Kingshighway, Sheepsheadbay, Bayridge.. there is brighton beach too. some parts are bad.. Staten Island is cheap too, well you can find cheap ones. But sheepsheadbay is very nice! It s close to the beach, and it s full of russians/ italians/ turkish/ jewish.. it s mix! it has every race. and lots of shopping centers. believe me :] good luck. brooklyn heights is really expensive and rich rich rich!Good Luck!

I had an aunt that lived over by Prospect Park. This was many years ago but she and her husband liked walking around the park. I don t remember them being rich , either. Maybe that was because they were living in Brooklyn?Peace.T

The cheapest as in least costliest place and the safest place are two different things. Which do you want more, cheap or safe?
