I m considering moving to Hawaii. Would you please tell me what life is like on the island. I m also having trouble finding info or pictures of any apartments. I d like a nice one in a safe neighborhood. Any help given is appreciated.
Living in Hawaii is in some ways, really great. The weather is consistently good, the beaches are beautiful, the mountains are green, we have rainbows almost daily. The mix of various ethnicities makes life interesting the potlucks are the best!In other ways, it is pretty much like living anywhere. You have a job, you come home after work, do chores, etc. What it is NOT like is being on vacation in Hawaii. You aren t going to the beach every day eating out at nice restaurants every night. The downside to living in Hawaii is that it is expensive. Very expensive. It is far away from everywhere making it costly time consuming to travel anywhere. If Grandpa dies, you may or may not be able to make it home for the funeral. Some folks don t deal well with being a minority, here, everyone is a minority. The public school system is not the best, if you have or plan to have kids. You may need to work two jobs to make ends meet. Your standard of living will almost certainly go down in terms of how big or nice an apartment you can rent, how often you go out, where you can afford to vacation, etc. The pay scale does NOT keep up with the cost of living.I have lived here for 30 years to me the good outweighs the bad. But not everyone makes the adjustment to island living.A couple of things about finding an apartment... Finding a safe neighborhood isn t too hard. Our violent crime rates are quite low. Finding a nice apartment that is affordable (unless money is no object) is not so easy. There really aren t many buildings that are built as rental apartments, like you will find on the mainland. Most buildings are condos, so you end up renting from an owner who sometimes employs a property manager, but it will not be in a complex where all of the units are rentals. That is why you are having trouble finding info or pictures of apartments. If you are serious about moving here, be sure you are arriving with a good amount of savings, and always make sure you have enough set aside to get yourself back home if things don t work out for you. It s best if you can line up a job in advance.
It s not all paradise. It s always hot, which I do not like at all! D:There s always a lot of traffic in the direction I need to go, In Ewa Beach it never rains, And sometimes it can just suck. But other than that, I love the local food. That is definitely the best part about living here.I would avoid streets in Waipahu and the ghetto parts of Aiea.
it s nice and beautiful here. but it s expensive to live here, unless you make over $200,000 a year, then you probably can live in comfort here. most local people here work 2 or 3 jobs, just so they can pay the rent on time
Honolulu is like a lot of other big cities, only cleaner. Big buildings, cars, and plenty of street hustlers. If you re more than a block from the beach you wouldn t even know you re on an island. Move to Maui.Hurt, The Skidmark Kidhttp://www.skidmarkkid.com/
How can you possibly be having trouble finding pictures of apartments when a quick search of Craigslist shows nothing but apartments listed with pictures? Seriously. http://honolulu.craigslist.org/apa/
it s a nice place to live, environment ways that is. locals don t like haoles (whites and tourists) much though, not all are hateful towards haoles but i ve noticed it quite a lot seeing as i was born and raised in kona, hawaii and am a blond caucasian woman.i m not saying all locals are in some way hostile towards haoles, but i do know you need to stand your ground if any of them decide you re a good target for some emotional punishment or from time to time a fight. but the reason they do this is because of their belief that haoles ruined the islands and stole the land from them, when in fact they sold the land to the haoles but they deny that and are themselves ruining the land by selling it to developers who plan out golf courses and resorts. and they claim haoles are the racist ones in the islands, but, as i ve learned, it s the whites that are discriminated against most here.but if you are in a good neighborhood and work at a good job, then you wouldn t have to worry about putting up with the ignorance. and make friends with as many people as you can of all skin tones, you should be fine. and learn a bit about the history of hawaii.i have only lived on the Big Island and so only know about this place. and if you are serious about moving here, you should search craigslist for apartments and jobs before you book your ticket. i hear that oahu has a good job market. the BI is a good place if you want some space. maui is good if you have the money and hope to see some celebrities from time to time. the other islands i m not sure about. but do your research first!
