What is the cheapest way to travel in the U.S? -

i moved back to the states after living in Europe for 15 years. I was sad to find out the American train system AMTRAK is pitiful to say the least. it cost as much to travel 147 miles in america as 687 miles in Europe. plus there are so few destinations.i tried greyhound and that was great. very cheap and had great busses, however they take the most indirect route. it takes 6 hours to travel 2 car hours .is there a cheaper way than Amtrak and more direct way than Greyhound.I am traveling from. Norfolk (VA Beach, newport news) , Virginia to Arlington, Virginia (washington DC)

For public transportation, you described it perfectly: Cheap or fast, but you usually can t have it both ways. The exception is between large cities. For example, the bus between New York and Washington DC is usually very fast and goes direct. For travel in smaller towns, renting a car is usually the best way to go. Car rental is usually much cheaper than in Europe, and gas (petrol) is cheaper too. Often you can rent a car for around $30 a day.

Americans pay a much lower tax rate than people in Europe. As a result, public, subsidized services such as trains are not as efficient as the ones you will find in Europe. As one of the other people said, a rental car is probably your fastest and most affordable option.

Buy a cheap car and when you are done traveling sell it off. That is what the guys of Top Gear did.

Rental car.

What should I do in NYC tomorrow morning? -

My train home leaves at 1:00. What should I do in the morning? I don t want to go shopping.

You have such little time to spend in such a big city!Go visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, two landmarks of New York City. To get there by the ferry, you need to purchase round-trip ferry tickets at Castle Clinton National Monument in Lower Manhattan. Ferries from New York operate on a loop, stopping first at Liberty Island and then at Ellis Island before returning to Battery Park, New York.Directions to get the ferry dock:http://www.nps.gov/stli/planyourvisit/puGo visit the Empire State Building, one of the many landmarks of our city. It is located at 350 5th Avenue. To get there by MTA subway, take the 1, 2, or 3 (Seventh Avenue Lines), A, C or E (Eighth Avenue Subway) to 34th Street/Penn Station. Or take the B, D, F, N, Q, R or Path to 34th Street/Avenue of the Americas.Go walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, which is, if I m correct, which I might not be, is the oldest structure in the city. If not the oldest structure, the oldest bridge. To get there, and walk across it, take the 4, 5, or 6 to the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall stop. Another option would be to take the J, M, or Z to Chambers Street.Go visit Coney Island, the home of the world famous Cyclone roller coaster. The amusement park will be closed, especially in the winter time, but the aquarium is open year-round, and sometimes the pier is open, so you can get some snacks -- they have fantastic corn dogs on the pier. To get there by train, take the D, Q N or F train to Stillwell Avenue, which is the last stop. This takes about 45 minutes from midtown Manhattan, and sometimes longer, depending on where you are coming from.Go to visit some museums. There are so many, that listing directions to all of them would be a waste of your time and my time, so instead, I will give you a list where there is a list of all the museums of New York City. You can pick some that sound interesting, and then you can find directions to that place, either from the website, or from Google, simply by typing in directions to and insert the musuem you would like to go to beside it. Museums in New York City http://www.ny.com/museums/all.museums.ht Best of New York City This is a website I found that has a guide to the best food, the best shopping, the best tours, and et cetera. For the best of both worlds, visit this website for the highest rated restaurants in the city, the best tours, the best bars, and the best everything:http://gonyc.about.com/od/bestofnewyorkcSince you have a short period of time, as you should probably get to the train station an hour before your train leaves just to be safe, which gives you rougly four hours of wiggle room to go see the city. So, pick one or two of the things I listed above -- play by ear.All the best ?

Have a slice of pizza, they are really good.

Is Las Vegas a city or a town?My uncle keeps saying it is a town, but can you help me prove him wrong? -

I personally think that it is a city due to its mass poplulation and how people visit there often.

Las Vegas is a city, but the odd thing about it is that while the Las Vegas strip (Las Vegas Blvd. between Sunset and Sahara) is considered Las Vegas and all the strip resorts have Las Vegas postal addresses; the Las Vegas strip is not in the city of Las Vegas. It s mostly in the unincorporated townships of Paradise and Winchester. City of Las Vegas begins just north of where the strip ends, at Sahara Ave.Added: cities have some form of independent government... there is a mayor, there are city ordinances, and a police department. Towns don t have any form of government; they re under the umbrella of county, state and federal governments. So that s how you know Las Vegas is a city; they have Mayor Oscar Goodman and other governmental employees.

Las Vegas is a city. I have never been to Vegas but it seems to me that kind of a place would be a city. I have lived in a town before, and towns can be rather small, and certainly not bustling with activity, have large buildings, etc. To me Las Vegas is a city even before this question was brought up. There is something to consider here, a lot of people when they think of American cities, they think of the large cities like New York, Chicago, Seattle, LA, Houston, etc. But an area doesn t necessarilly have to be a large place into to be deemed as a city. There are several towns not large enough to be considered big cities, but too big to be considered quaint little hamlets. Annapolis, the state capitol even though it is dwarfed by both nearby Baltimore and Washington is actually considered a small city. And there are a few other spots in Maryland that are large enough to be considered as small cities, as I am sure this is the case with every state. So I don t know where Vegas ranks in the realm of large cities, but I do know that a city while it has to obviously take up more area than a small town, it doesn t have to be a large sprawling urban area to be considered a city of any stature.

It is a city...with over 1/2 million people. See site below. See 2nd site to read the divfference between a city and a town. see that Las Vegas is an incorporated city with a city government.

The state of nevada has it incorporated as a city on March 16, 1911. It is not a subjective thing. It is a legal definition. Obviously in 1911 the city had a very small population.------------Nowadays the city has a population of roughly 600K in a county with population 2 million. Most of the better known casinos are outside of the city limits. They built the Stratosphere in 1996 to be inside the city limits to see if they could take advantage of some of the money pouring into the unincorporated region of the city. The Stratosphere has had limited advantage.-----------The major casinos inside the city limits that had gaming revenue over $72 m last year are:(1) The Golden Nugget is the dominant casino along Fremont Street.(2) The Stratosphere is just north of the strip (the Sahara is outside the city limits(3) Palace Station casino within a mile of the strip(4) Arizona Charlies Decatur Avenue [in a very ethnic portion of the city](5) Santa Fe [in a northern suburb(6) Rampart Casino in Marriot resort in Summerlin(7) Suncoast Casino near the Marriot -----------------------------All the other casinos are outside of the city limits. Besides the strip the casinos like Red Rock and Texas Station and Boulder Station are just outside of the city limits.

8 out of 10 people, will tell you it s a City. Myself i see it as a town, seeing it s no where as large as some City s that i have lived in. While living in europe, to me it s a large town.

is there a difference? but I have always heard it as the city of vegas :)

Is the poverty and homeless that bad in hawaii ? -

Some one was saying poverty and homeless in hawaii is very bad . Is the poverty , homeless , crime worse than LA and Miami ?Like is 10% or 35% of the people or more in poverty or out of work ? Like how mad is the poverty and people out of work?Jobs do not pay well and lack of jobs ?

Majority of the homeless are the Hawaiians, and it may be because they re on drugs, but more often than not they can t afford the skyrocketing rents here. It s sad to know that native people can t live comfortably on their own land. It s disgusting. That s not to say that ALL Hawaiians are homeless. I know plenty who have jobs and live in either apartments or houses with no problems. On Oahu, the Waianae coast and Ala Moana Beach Park are where you ll see them. Sleeping in their tents and cars.

It depends who you talk to. I have lived in NYC and there are more homeless people in NYC, but, because of the cold weather during the winter and because NY State provides plenty of shelters and assistance, you don t see them as often as you do in Hawaii. Hawaii is warm and there are plenty of parks and beaches for the homeless to camp at, so they are simply more visible. The state of Hawaii does offer plenty of benefits, but unless you have a social security card, birth certificate and driver s license, it is very hard to attain these benefits. The big issue, in my opinion, are the drugs. People spend all their life savings to drugs - namely crystal meth. You see these people in the streets who are addicted to the drug. The poverty level is similar to NYC. There are the areas which are nice and expensive - Hawaii Kai, Manoa, Haleiwa, etc. But then you have your inner city area. Unfortunately, all the inner city areas are in Honolulu, which is a huge tourist draw, so people see the inner city life on their way from the airport to their nice hotel in Waikiki. Jobs pay OK. However, the cost of living is extremely high because everything has to be shipped out to HI, so everything becomes more expensive, causing more people to lose money.

Coming from San Francisco which has a very bad homeless problem, I d say Oahu has just as bad or even a worse problem with homeless. However, I do not believe crime is as bad as some of the other major cities like LA and NYC. It is mostly petty crimes in Hawaii, a lot of thefts and not as many violent crimes.Oahu is where the majority of Hawaii s industry is and as a result, about 90% of the population live on Oahu. Oahu s unemployment rate is still fairly low, about 7.5% which is a bit lower than the national average in Oct. of 10.2 %Jobs do pay much less while the cost of living is comparable to San Francisco. The low salary is commonly referred to on the island as the paradise tax or price of paradise . Hawaii is a great place to live, but a really bad place to try to save or make a lot of money.

you only get problems in and around honolulu...there are bums like most places and a huge meth problem..but once out of the city everyone trusts each other and things like hitch-hiking are common. its way chill and relaxed. most hawaiians are not homeless but many live in houses i would call small or crappy.

Poverty and homelessness is very bad in Hawaii and Africa and the whole world.. It is a shame to humanity.. We must fight against this phenomena and try our best to mitigate poverty and prevent unnecessary wars.

Florida Hotel and Conference Center? -

Alright so...I was looking for answers as to whether a guest, who is not booked in my room, still stay over. Here are the answers I found:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AofI9qbChQ3hnr4sRDTsfZgjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20080618211305AAUgNDzSo now I m wondering...does the Florida Hotel and Conference Center charge per person or per room? Because if it s per room, my guest can stay over with me and not have to drive back home at like two in the morning or something. But if it s by person...then that will be a problem. Anyone done this in the Florida H CC? I need an answer ASAP since the trip is in two weeks. Thank you so much.

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it s very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

Any ideas on which airport and hotel to use for an affordable Las Vegas Bachelorette party? -

I am researching for my upcoming Bachelorette party. We are considering April 8-11 of 2010 and I am trying to find the best prices possible for my girls. Any ideas on where to get my flight or which hotels have good deal, websites etc??? Please help I am getting google search overload. Thank you

The best way to get a great deal is to book them separately. For flights, check sites like Southwest airlines or US Airways. Also do a search on kayak engine. It will check all airlines going to Vegas and all major travel sites and return the cheapest fare. http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/cheap-fliFor hotels, book directly from the hotels using their discount promo codes to get the maximum discounts. Here are a few codes. http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/special.p

There are only two places to look for airline tickets ... Southwest airlines and everywhere else. You will find the same price for the other airlines no matter what site you go to. The reason is they do not discount airline tickets to anyone so they are priced the same. Southwest does not share their ticket sales with anyone and the only way you can book with them is to go to their website. Hotels are a different situation. Some larger websites can buy blocks of rooms at reduced prices and then they can dicker with the prices they charge. Here is a webpage to help you look for and compare prices so you can compare oranges to oranges and apples to apples. You have to be careful with hotels that charge resort fees which will make their rooms more expensive than you think they are. Read the Resort Fee Scam page also.

Always look for hotel promotional codes that can save you a bundle of money of your hotel room, they also will usually offer free slot play, dining specials, and a ton of other great perks. Do not book airfare and hotel together, typically will not save you any money. I know of a great site that offers a list of hotels and their current promotional offers. Here is a direct link http://vegasmadeeasy.com/plan-your-stay/ Have fun!!!

Try out local TV8 which has links www.lasvegasnow.com

It might help to tell us what airport you are leaving from.*

Where should I live???? -

I m getting ready to go to college next fall, so I figured I should pick somewhere I love. I want the four seasons, but I don t want it to be too harsh. Help! I currently live in California.

Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, Kentucky or North Carolina. There is also Washington (the state) and Oregon.

I would find a nice college in Virginia or Pennsylvania. You will be in proximity to New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Baltimore.. all fun, big cities.

Better place to live, Phoenix AZ or Denver CO? -

I love it how whenever a question is posted about Phoenix, the only thing people write about in their answers is the hot weather. I ll give you more details... No question I would go to Denver. Both places are pretty comparable in terms of cost of living, but Denver stands out as more of a youthful city whereas Phoenix is older (retirees). Denver s population is more diverse and the nightlife is far better. Phoenix is completely characterless and has no cultural diversity at all (Phoenix s idea of diversity is its gazillions of Mexican restaurants and shops that sell Native American jewelry). Denver has lots of parks and bike paths and is a very outdoorsy place in general. Phoenix does not - from May to September it s just too hot and the sun is too intense for cycling. Also, another reason is the economy. Even though both places are hurting just like the rest of the country, Denver is in far better shape than Phoenix. For one thing, it has a high concentration of federal jobs (in fact it s 2nd only to Washington in number of federal positions) and during a recession Uncle Sam tends to have more job openings than the private sector. Phoenix has been hammered by the housing and construction slump as well as its own problems with illegal immigration. Also, if you like the seasons, Denver would be the better pick. Go to Denver.Phoenix is not as outdoorsy of a city as Denver. The people in Phoenix are outdoors about 7 or 8 months, tops. From May to October, no one is outside. They re either inside their homes, or they re driving 90 mph to get indoors to where there is air-conditioning. Phoenix is a city of people who are always in transit and in a hurry to get indoors and out of the brutal sun. Never is this more the case than during the summer. Denver does get cold during the winter but it s usually dry and fair weather so there s always plenty of winter sports (skiing etc.,) Denver is also a more international city. The DIA has plenty of international flights outside of North America whereas Sky Harbor does not. Phoenix is just a big American metropolis with nice weather and nice scenery, but no diversity and no character. Denver is safer. I would never move back to PHX which is #1 in the country in hit-and-run accidents, #1 in identity theft, #1 in accidental child drownings and #1 in kidnappings. It s also #1 in meth use and #1 in teenage punks who will follow you through the parking lot of a strip mall panhandling for money.

Denver has more of its own culture and Identity, where Phoenix is a huge hodgepodge of people who come here from other places. Having said that, I spent 22 winters in the Denver area and do not want to live there in the winter again. Can t stand the summers here in Phoenix - really there is no prettier place to be than Denver in the summer for relatively mild weather and tons of outdoor activities. Winter here in Phoenix is really lovely - moderate temperatures and never any ice on the roads. If I had to pick one over the other, it would be Denver. But if I could live in my perfect little world, I d be a snowbird (one who actually knows how to drive, that is) and enjoy the best of both.

I d say Phoenix. It s cold and desolate in Denver, and Denver isn t that nice looking of a city. Plus, in Arizona it s always sunny, and the winters are milder.

Phoenix all the way ! it s a very large city, it has a lot of beautiful areas and homes, also a lot more to do than Denver, and it s always sunny.

Well I live in Scottsdale, and I love it, most of the year the weathers GREAT! The only bad thing is the hot weather in the summer, but that makes it good for swimming and stuff.

Phoenix, Arizona, the best weather in the world. Denver Colorado is health conscious place for hiking, etc. I would pick Phoenix Arizona.
