USA/US/America - which one should I use in a formal letter or conversation? -

USA/US/America - which one should I use in a formal letter or conversation? - e.g. when writing to an American University and also what is the difference between the three?

In formal writing, you should write The United States. In legal documents, you will see The United States of America though you will likely not have any situation in which you d need to write it that way. In a very formal conversation, also say The United States, though in most circumstances saying just The U.S. is fine. You ll find that most Americans say The U.S. more than anything else. The U.S.A. is sometimes used in writing (probably to differentiate U.S. from us ) but not often in speech (since it s longer). I would say that The U.S. and The U.S.A have a neutral meaning, but America is used in patriotic ways. That s why you ll hear people say God bless America or politicians frequently saying America in their speeches. Also, if you use U.S. or U.S.A don t forget to include the in front of it. It s a common mistake I ve seen international students make, so be aware that the is needed.

The formal term on legal documents is the United States of America . In oral conversation, use the United States . America originally meant anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, including what is now Canada, Mexico, Panama, Chile, Brazil, etc.In writing, US can be confused the word us . If you are using US in a sentence, it should be spelled U.S. . When addressing mail, this is not necessary.

america is a contient and the Us mean us went to the cinema together (example) and it deducts an a it also means us without caps and so i would Recommend u use the full name USA short for the United states Of America

The country s formal name is The United States of America. Although most people simply refer to it as the United States. All three mean the same thing.

USA and US are both abreviations which do not fit into formal letters. America is a contenant that involves canada and mexico along with other countries.Use United States

I would use The United States. I think that s better than using an abbrieviation or America.

USA ... America is very informal
