Bostonians wearing chains? -

I have noticed in a good amount of movies set in Boston or New england(gone baby gone, the departed) they show at least a couple of the characters wearing chains with crosses or sometimes saint pendants. i am from the boston area and wear a thin chain with a cross, but i dont really notice too many people wearng them. is there a reputation we have or something or for those of you that visit from out of state, do we actually wear this stuff alot?

I hadn t noticed this, but I can make a guess at what it might indicate. The East Coast / New England area has a very high concentration of Catholics, compared to the rest of the country which tends to lean much more toward the various Protestant sects. Some East Coast states are nearly 50% Catholic, while in some areas of the deep South there might be only around 5%!So to a filmmaker, things like cross pendants, saints images, and references to Mary can be ways of creating a sort of movie shorthand that says You re in Catholic country now, folks - with whatever correct or incorrect assumptions that might rouse in the viewer. :)(Yeah, Protestants do wear crosses sometimes, but much less than Catholics, because of differing interpretations of the idea of idolatry .)

theres alot of ridiculous stereotypes about us in boston, but gone baby gone was the affleck brothers who are from here so i dont know

we just like wearing crosses ummmm know its just the movies like alot of east mass. people are christian but really isnt nothing
