I forgot there is one across the GG Bridge in Marin county where I live at the Marin Headlands. http://www.norcalhostels.org/m Report Abuse
Been in a hostel in europe, not in the us though. It was just like a dorm- sharing bunk beds (about 10 other people with you) and a shower room (3-4 NON co-ed showers). If youve ever been at a camp or in a college dorm- its just like that.
I ve been past them. I d avoid the one on Ellis St. (City Center) since Ellis can get pretty creepy at night. Downtown might be ok, never been in it. If I had to choose myself, I d go for the Fort Mason one (Fisherman s Wharf) since it s almost on the Bay.
SF hostels are pretty nice. There are a number of them; my favorite is in Fort Mason, since it s right on the water, great views, and if you re interested in Fisherman s Wharf, about a ten minute walk from there.
