What is Fresno, Ca like? -

I m not from California but looking to possibly attend Cal State Fresno next fall. I m wondering what the city is like, and perhaps the school, if you re aware of that as well.Crime doesn t really bother me, but I value cool hangouts/public districts, whether or not the city is bike-friendly, and most importantly, the people who inhabit the place.

Fresno is a pretty big city. Not as big as like LA or San Francisco but pretty big. There s crime in every city. California State University is located in a pretty good area of the city. A lot of the students ride their bikes to campus and around. It s a pretty big campus so it makes sense. I m into the music scene in Fresno so I can tell you a lot about that. There s a lot of smaller venues where bands play. There s a big venue called Save Mart Center right next to CSUF. It pretty much belongs to CSUF. Jay Z just played a show there last weekend and Kiss and Kelly Clarkson are up next. There s a lot of bars and clubs. Starline is a pretty popular club for the artsy people. Tower District is a small place near downtown Fresno. It has a lot of really neat locally owned stores and cafe s. Another hang out spot is Fashion Fair Mall. There s three main malls but Fashion Fair is the most popular. Some stores are Urban Outfitters, Metro Park, American Eagle Outfitters, BCBG Max Azria, Buckle, Guess, Vans, Hollister, Hot Topic, Quicksilver and a ton of other stores. There is also Riverpark. Also a lot of nice restaurants and stores. A really nice place to just hang out but it is on the more expensive side. Also, there s Downtown Fresno. There is a lot of culture there. A lot of really nice thrift stores and art galleries as well. The public transportation is not great but it s alright. It s pretty inexpensive. There s bus stops all around CSUF. There are also apartments all around CSUF. Like I said, it s located in a pretty safe place in Fresno so you can pretty much walk or ride your bike anywhere. There s some cool places near Fresno too. The mountains are just about an hour drive away. The beach is about two hours away. Now about the people:People that live near CSUF are for the most part friendly. People in Fresno are generally friendly and sociable. The bad thing about Fresno is that it gets REALLY hot here. Like, REALLY HOT. That s all I can think of to tell ya about Fresno.

Fresno isn t too bad although you ll find people calling it all kinds of pretty harsh things. The area area around Fresno State is all pretty college student friendly. My favorite area of town are Tower District and Downtown. There is a really great local music scene here with a lot of awesome bands. If you have a myspace I would suggest going to the band section and doing a search for Fresno bands to get an idea of the music we offer. There are some pretty cool bars and clubs as well.People are pretty cool and laid back for the most part. There are a lot of college kids around here with the area surrounding Fresno State being a majority of college students. The weather here as mentioned before, sucks! We can get to 112 in the middle of summer easy, with no cool down at night because we re stuck in a huge valley. Winter gets cold but its really not that bad. No snow in town but the mountains are as close as 45 minutes and they get plenty of snow. We do get a lot of frost on cars, lawns, roofs etc and also we have a lot of fog. Especially when you re in the more rural parts of town. Schools actually have late start days because of fog around here.Mountains aren t too far away and neither is the beach. We are an incredibly diverse city with probably every culture and race imaginable. Also our former Mayor was Alan Autry who played Bubba in In the Heat of the Night. I mention this because that of course is what will swing you over to joining us. Lol.Overall its not a bad place to live as long as you don t mind the heat and the smell of cow manure.

Very hot in the Summer, cold (by California standards in the winter), not a whole lot of culture. Lots of good Mexican food. If you can play large brass band instruments, you can get an almost free ride.
