Apartment on 36th Place near USC - a good choice? -

Moving to LA soon and someone is offering to share a 2 bedroom apartment a couple blocks from campus on 36th place for $850/month + utilities. Photos look decent, but I will have to make a choice sight unseen. The alternative is a shared place on 2605 Severance St for $920/month. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello Hardoon,I saw your question on Sunday. I went to USC and lived on 28th Street off of Hoover for five years. The area was very safe. In fact, most of the crime was by USC students.Let me tell you something about Los Angeles. There are pockets of bad and good areas. Most of the people who answer these questions do not even live in Los Angeles. Beverly Hills has a very high crime rate, yet they do not have bars on their homes. Bars do not mean the area is a so called ghetto. Many people are just like me. They drive by an area once every ten, yes ten, years. Than they are only on the main streets. One of my cars is being painted. The paint shop just called after two weeks. I am going to pick up my car late this afternoon off of Washington and Hoover. I will drive by 36th Place, and I will let you know what I think. I know the area around 28th street is okay, but I cannot remember 36th Place. I do live in Los Angeles.....................update............Very sorry Hardoon, but they just called. My new chrome bumpers did not come in. They will be in tomorrow after 12 noon. Again, sorry. I will drive down 36th Place tomorrow..........................UPDATE 3 PM.................Hello Hardoon,Just got in. Severance St is right in the heart of the action. I can see why they want more money. Can you believe me and my wife lived less than 1 block from there. That was our first apt. I could not remember Severance St to save my life. If you like to party, that is the place to rent. The extra money would be well worth it.36th Place. All kinds of signs welcoming USC students. The area is not as good but it is okay....grade C. This is between 1000 and 1340. Do not rent anything higher than 1340. That would take you across Normandie. I told you Los Angeles was full of good and bad pockets. Normandie is the dividing line.If you do not like to party or want to be where the action is, rent on 36th Place. My car looks like it came off the show room floor. It was nice talking to you. I never finished USC. I was drafted my last year. I ended up deep in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam in an Assault Helicopter Co. Study hard and finish for me.You have a great day, from Los Angeles.

I answered the other question you asked. The Severence St. apartment is in a slightly better setting. It s more USC friendly. There s more frat houses along the street. It s other college people like yourself.Unless the 36th Place apartment is in the 1100 Block I would not take it. 36th Place is eleven blocks long. Off campus it runs from Vermont Ave. to Arlington Ave. The further you get from campus the more iron fences you see around the properties and the more iron bars you see on the windows. That s not a good sign. Especially when there are iron bars on the second floor windows as well.

Unless you go to SC. Hell no it s not a good deal. That area is Ghetto as hell. I go to SC. But I live in Pasadena. So unless you go to SC. DON T live around the campus. Trust me on this one.

i would go there to check the area out first as they always show good pics
