Why does mail from California to Texas take so long? -

I have a friend that lives in Dallas, TX and I live in Southern California and every time I mail my friend something First Class Mail which regularly takes 3 days it takes 5 days for her to receive it. Why is this?

Mainly because it stays on the ground. A lot of mail when going from say NY to LA will go on the plane if there is room, where from LA to Dallas it would stay on the ground and go through 2 or more post office sorting stations. Instead of just 1 if it were going to NY.
