United states are code ?? NY ? please help? -

i want to call some friend in u.s and i live in middle east.. what i know is the international code of states is 001 right?and 212 for NY state.. so should i put like this 001212( then he s number)??but i didn t work !! he says i should put 001-1-632 then his number and it didn t work!!! also : /what should i do.. says network unavailable !!and sometimes says wrong!thx in adv

Dial 00 + 1 + US area code + US local telephone number.These are the area codes in NY state: 212, 315, 347, 516, 518, 585, 607, 631, 646, 716, 718, 845, 914, 917632 is the area code for Manila. 212 is New York.Perhaps your friend is not telling you the truth, and is actually in Manila? Or perhaps you are dialing their cell phone which has a Manila number? You should double check.If you friend is indeed in the Philippines, the dialing code is different (00 63 2).

You cannot assume the 212 part. There are many area codes in NY State. 212 used to be the area code for just NY City (all the other areas of NY State were other area codes.) But that was long ago. Today there are at least 4 or 5 area codes just for NY City. And also, today people have area codes from other areas! (Don t ask why, it s way too complicated to explain.) So the truth is, you must know the specific area code assigned to your friend. I m sorry about that!
