from experience I can tell you that the other answers are simplistic and although correct in theory are far from the actual situation, I have wondered for years how colombian drug lords, yardies and asian terrorists can get residence and citizenship but decent law abiding english people cannot even get considered, marriage doesn t work either any american citizen marrying a foreigner( so cutely called an alien ) is immediately viewed with suspicion by INS and homeland security, a rich friend from england recently did it all easily by employing a high priced immigration lawyer and it went through without a hitch but he had a lot of money so that seems to be the only way, we could do with more decent english people here as the country declines but not only are you excluded from the green card lottery you also need a visa for visits over 90 days, hardly what I would call a special relationship
Well it s not impossible, and it s not as hard as you may think it is. There s a whole lot of bureaucracy and paper work but it can be done so long as you re eligible to immigrate to the United States. There s several ways to immigrate to the U.S.1) Employer sponsored - Land a job in the U.S. and the company will sponsor you for a green card (permanent resident card). You can do this by either a) applying for a U.S. job (you ll need at least a bachelor s degree to be considered) or you can work for a U.S. company in the U.K. and move your way up and apply to one of their company job postings at one of their U.S. locations. This is the most common path for people from U.K., Canada, etc to immigrate to the U.S.2) Immigration via a family member - If you have any immediate relatives who are U.S. citizens, they can sponsor you for immigration. 3) Student visa (studying at a U.S. university/college) which can eventually lead to a green card if you can get access to permanent employment after study.4) Marriage to a U.S. citizen. Do consider that moving to the U.S. isn t easy nor is the U.S. as nice as it may seem in movies, so if you do decide to move to the U.S. make sure you definitely want to come here. Grass is always greener on the other side ...Hopefully this helps. Good luck.P.S. Ignore the first answer, it s clearly a troll. The U.S. was built by immigrants. =]
It is equally or even more difficult for an American to emigrate to the UK, and very difficult even just to get a UK residency visa when not seeking a job. This is the advice I post for people asking about moving to the USA from the UKCheck with US companies in the UK and UK companies with offices in the USA. For example, Hilton and Marriott hire international staff as interns.UK citizens can visit the USA for up to 90 days as a tourist, so you could travel for interviews tests if necessary.https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/withouhttp://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visSearch international exchange programs USA and there should be many links to programs that offer temporary and seasonal work in the US. Examples are: http://www.ccusa.com/country.aspxhttp://yummyjobs.com/Do carefully check any programs you might be interested in as not all of them are a good deal.Another option is to go to school in the USA. UK citizens can easily get a US student visa and you MAY be able to work on-campus. Having a USA university diploma or certificate will make applying for jobs easier, and going to school in the US will help you decide if you really want to move here.http://www.collegesintheusa.com/If you decide to go to university in the USA the first step is to identify several schools you might want to attend and make contact with their offices of international students For example:http://global.tulane.edu/oiss/http://oiss.uno.edu/Good luck!
British people can t go to the US via the green card system as its not available to us, so it is a lot tougher.
