Whats the best way to get from New Jersey to Vermont? -

I m looking for the cheapest way to get to vermont, but i can t afford a plane ticket, so i need to find another way. I can drive but i d like to avoid the 6 hour drive. any answers are appreciated! trying to get up to the University of Vermont to visit my best friend for her birthday !
