Uhm, Manhattan is REALLY expensive, and like other people mentioned, you ll be living in closet for $800 a month. You can try to rent a room in someone s apartment, or maybe you have a friend where you two can split the rent. Within a 100 miles of Manhattan, you can get better apartments. You should try Brooklyn or Queens. the Bronx is a little ghetto, but cheaper. Check on Craigslist.
If you find an apartment that s $800 a month you ll be up in the middle of nowhere, and whatever money you saved will then be spent on getting transportation in and out of Manhattan. A commuter rail ticket can cost a few hundred dollars a month.
You can find studios and small apartments for under $800 in Brooklyn or Queens. Try this search:http://newyork.craigslist.org/search/aapAnother option is a room or sharing a place with one or more roommates:http://newyork.craigslist.org/roo/
Go to New York Times.com and go to real estate and you can search price ranges there but to be honest you won t find anything in manhattan under 1500, but you can try there. Good Luck
