While I encourage you to learn ASL and to get involved with the Deaf community, I should warn you that becoming an interpreter to help deaf people not feel alone is not a good thing. Deaf people are people, they don t need handouts and don t need pity. Interpreters that have the mindset that something is broken, and that they need to help the poor, poor deaf people, are seen as more harmful than helpful to the Deaf community. While I m sure your intentions are noble, I would not say things like that, and try to reassess your motivation for wanting to go into that field... if you just want to become friends with a Deaf person, then... become friends with one. you don t need to be an interpreter to become friends with Deaf people.
