You ll of course want to see New York and Los Angeles, but they re somewhat overrated in my book. Chicago, San Francisco, and San Diego should be at the top of your list. Boston, DC, Denver, Miami, Portland, and Seattle too.If I were you, I d take 1 month+ to make your way down the urban east coast (without a car) from Montreal to Boston to NYC to Philly to DC, and another month+ to drive the West Coast (beautiful drive) from San Diego up to Vancouver, stopping in LA/San Francisco/Portland/Seattle. Stop in Denver and/or Las Vegas on your way to the west coast.A week or two for Chicago / Toronto / Niagara falls. Texas (particularly Austin and San Antonio) is interesting, as is New Orleans - but if it s hard to squeeze them in I may not worry about it. Miami is neat, but it doesn t really have anything that Southern California doesn t other than hurricanes and old people.Major American cities not worth visiting: Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit, and anywhere in Ohio. They re depressing cultural voids with nothing to do.
