Should a tourist from California rent a car while visiting NYC.? -

I will be in NYC to take in some sights and have a good time. Should I just ride the subway or use a car service or rent a car? I plan on visiting Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Time Square, Statue of Liberty and maybe Atlantic City New Jersey among other places.

No way! It costs a fortune to park a car in the city - if you can find a garage with space. Use the subway and bus system. Get a guidebook that has the maps or go to the transit authority website and familiarize yourself with the various lines before you go. For Atlantic City you d need to get a bus, probably at the Port Authority. Save yourself some time on the Statue of Liberty and just take the [free] Staten Island Ferry that sails near it. It s a time-consuming trip to go to the statue itself and you ll need tickets in advance.

If you rent a car you wont be able to park anywhere in Manhattan unless you use a garage. You will find it difficult keeping up with the cab drivers, they are pretty sharp drivers, and the one way streets and no available street parking will make you crazy. If you drive around to look and sight see you can get a good lay of the land outside Manhattan and parking wont be such a problem. I live in the bay area and lived in New York city years ago.I suggest car rental only for sightseeing to Long Island and New Jersey just for a day or so. Car rentals are very expensive in Manhattan.

You re kidding right? My friend, this is NYC not Cali, a car is not need here. You can get anywhere are the city by public transit. Now, if you re going to AC, you can either take the bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal or a weekend express train service from Penn Station. You can also drive down to AC from NYC.Good luck

HELL NO!! Subway is the best!! NYV driver are so aggresive and scary... We are from San Francisco and didn t drive until the last few days, because we needed to go to Washington, getting out of the city was so scary! If you have too, rent the car from the airport and make sure you have lots of quaters ( at least $5-7) for the road tolls.. Yes, you think San francisco is expensive for parking?? NYC is crazy, you have to be rich to park at the parking lot- $8 per 20 mins.. (Street parking is hard to find.)You have to go to ALantic City, it s so cool.. Lots of shopping and casino- we won money there.. There are Bus that goes to Atlantic city from NYC Chinatown or Downtown area for about $20-40.We just got back from NYC about 3 months ago and I m definitely going back! We were there for 3 days, but I think 5 days should be enough. Get the 3+ day NewYorkPass, it will save you a lot of money! http://www.newyorkpass.com/ Also, buy your NYC T-shirt ( 5 for 10.99) at Times SQ.Around Empire State building, they have a lot of cheap NYc sounviers. Hotel wise, book early. We stayed in Chinatown (Hotel 91) but it s clean and fairly cheap- though you can heard the subway at night, it didn;t bother us. Becareful of big and cheap hotel, I heard it s not clean,, The last thing you want is to bring home some bed bugs.Broadway Show: If Wicked was too expensive ( it was for us), so we went to see Fuerza Bruta , we got a coupon online and pay half price =) so check online! .. Let put it this way, we will never forget this show.. we had a blast!http://www.broadwaybox.com/ ? for cheap shows! Ps. We finally watched Wicked In San Francisco, it was great!

No. Use the subway. Parking in NYC is a nightmare...and SUPER expensive. The trains are inexpensive and convenient to 99% of the sights. Also consider taking the Mega bus or Bolt Bus. They have great fares from NYC.

Don t even think of renting a car, as parking is very hard to find and expensive. Use the subway or take taxis. New York is also very walkable, as it s not particularly hilly.

No. I cannot imagine a bigger waste of money. We actually WALK to places here in NYC. If it s over a mile Subway, bus or taxi.

where would you park it? just use public transportation.
