Foliage turns in mid-October in most of the state. Earlier in the western part of the state, later is the east. The temperatures are mostly in the 50 s in October. We did have an unpleasant cold snap in October with some evening temperatures in the high 30 s in the Boston area. The past few days have been warm. It was around 70F yesterday and in the 60 s today. By the end of this month it will be cool and stay cool til March with the exception of a few heat waves in the 50 s to 60 s. The coldest month is January with lows in the Boston area to about 0-10F, colder in the western part of the state.
I ve seen the Swamp Maples start turning as early as late August sometimes. Usually the cooling starts to get noticeable in September, especially at night when you can open the windows and shut off the A/C. About the end of September it starts with a tree here, a tree there . Mid to late October is usually peak time with a tendency to start in the north and west, moving to the southeast with the cape being last. Usually with November s arrival is heard the melodious tones of a half a dozen leaf blowers in the neighborhood.
It gets cooler but not really cold. Although there is an occasional cold snap, daytime temperatures in the 50s are not normal until early November. 60s and low 70s more typical for the 45 days before that. Foliage begins turning in MA at the end of September, but is at its peak (the most beautiful being in north-central MA and west of the Connecticut River) from about October 13 to October 21.
Middle of October. Thats when it gets cold and all the leaves are falling from the trees. But in the beginning of October is when the leaves start to change colors and it look really pretty. Although this year before Halloween maybe 2 weeks before it snowed. So that was really weird.
