Spend 8 bucks on a National Parks Passport (you can get them at any NP) and see how many you can hit. There are plenty of options (historic sites, natural and scenic, etc.) and they tend to be free or relatively inexpensive with plenty of lodging options nearby (i.e. tent camping, cabin rentals, etc.).

High school road trip ideas? -
Me and one of my best friends are planning a road trip for next summer when I graduate. She already graduated but we re both going to be under 21.Originally we wanted to head all the way west (we live on the east coast), but due to a large lack of money we aren t going to be able to do that.A couple of ideas we ve had are fly out west and then rent a car and travel around a bit (but many of the car companies won t rent cars to us because of our age. Also, we ve thought about driving to Boston then biking up and around New England. Or go somewhere like Beaver Island, MI to camp.Pretty much we want to rough it and do this AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE. We re girls so we also have to worry about safety. Any ideas at all would be appreciated! :)
