I want to move to Chicago, but I hate taking public transportation. Am I making a mistake? -

I love Chicago, and want to move there, but I can t stand taking public transportation anywhere. I like to get in my car and go where I need to go. Driving also relaxes me. The idea of standing outside, waiting for a bus or train, etc. urks me. Also, I just leased a new car. I do love Chicago though, so am I making a mistake by moving there if I refuse to take public transportation? Thanks.

You ll be fine as long as you make a lot of money. Because it s going to cost to park downtown. Also, it takes a lot of time to drive there because it s people first and cars a far second. With hundreds of people trying to cross the street, and one car trying to turn, who do you think gets to go? The people. Try to pull something and agressivly push them out of the way and you will wind up with a dented fender (from someone slugging your car) or a ticket. The city was designed around the transportation. To be Mr. Suburbanite and ignore that fact is your choice. Maybe you should move to a nearby suburb and only visit the city occasionally?

I totally understand where you are coming from. I took public transportation downtown everyday, and yes, after a while..it gets to be way too much, the noise, the people, standing in the freezing cold waiting for buses that take forever..usually they are pretty good, if they are very late, it s usually due to the fact they had an issue with someone, and had to kick em off...Anyway, taking public transportation will cut your travel time down, and will be less expensive. But the good thing about driving, is if you live in the city long enough, you will most of the time be able to find shortcuts, and get around all that sh**. I can make it from the north side, to the south side in about 25 min (takes about 20 on the e-way with no traffic, which usually does not happen), without having to deal with the expressways...ya just got to learn your way around, and I totally understand why you would want to drive instead of the train.

It s not mandatory to take public transportation, especially if you are not working downtown. Parking anywhere in the city can be expensive and in some areas difficult to find. I have commuted many years by car and like it for the same reasons as you mention. However I have taken public transportation, especially in heavy snow weather.Find a residence near the CTA el or METRA. This will provide a way to get to work and play if your car needs service or the weather is bad. The trains will not be slowed down by heavy street traffic...buses will.

Well the traffic here is horrible which is why public transportation is the smart way to go in Chicago. During rush hour the highways are all just big parking lots. The metra is ALWAYS reliable, they re always on time so if your workplace is close to a metra stop and your home is also, than find a way where you get to the metra right before the train arrives. CTA buses have to sit in traffic too however, but trains are always fast. It s up to you if you really think sitting in a traffic jam is relaxing.

If driving in Chicago relaxes you, you might want to consult with a psychiatrist. Just kidding. You might be relaxed, but some drivers tend to suffer from road rage.Find a suburban job with a company parking lot.

yes. live in the suburbs. then you can have both worlds.

parking is expensive here.

Dude, youre gonna be stuck in traffic in downtown for a long time. and i costs money to park.
