I live in Monument, Colorado (in between Colorado Springs and Denver) It can be anywhere from the negatives to the forties. Depending on how much snow we got the past year the trails may be covered in snow or very muddy and mushy. My recommendation is to check the weather before coming and make sure it is the way you want it to be. Also, check how much snow we got and if it was a lot expect mud and patches of snow. The best times to go hiking is in late May or early June for Southern Colorado, and late June to early July for hiking in Northern Colorado. If you can only come in February then you will have to face more challenges. One really good place for hiking, especially backpacking is in Silverthorne, Colorado. It is called Eagles Nest Wilderness. It goes very far so you can hike short distances or long ones. If you do get the opportunity to go there then bring something to fish with. When I went up there we hiked to Willow Lake and stayed the night. The other people staying there caught a fish with no bait and no hook. Just a string and a clothespin. So little people go up there that the fish don t get scared very easily and there are a TON of them. Good luck with your trip into CO! ^_^
The weather is totally unpredictable as others have said. While it is doubtful that you will find many clear dry trails, it could happen. You have several choices. Be sure to wear high-top heavy winter hiking boots with warm socks and just hike through the snow. Wear gators to keep the snow out of your boots. We hike some in winter, but mostly we snowshoe. A lot more fun, you aren t limited to trails and don t slip and slide as much. You can rent snowshoes and poles at many sporting goods and ski rental stores. There are usually some lower down open space trails that are fairly open and dry unless we have just a ton of snow. Several to check out include the Boulder County Open Space and Castlewood Canyon State Park.
FYI: i live in leadville colorado and have for years and years, the temp is around... I say between 15 degrees farinheit and about -25 degrees farenheit, I am sorry but unless you are a polar bear then i dont know what to do . I say dont go hiking with out proper gear, unless you are talking about in denver, around there its about between 30 degrees and 40. I really hope this helps or if not then call oprah and complain.-Kendra
I live in the plains about 90 miles from Denver and it s been 15 degrees the last few days. My birthday is in February and I hate it because I never get to do anything outside because it s so cold. So ya, hiking...not a good idea. Winter in Colorado is very beautiful but very cold.
I went to Colorado Springs this past February (mid), and we went up to mountains, not for hiking, but to see a little hippy town. The weather was wonderful. The skies were clear the whole time, it was a bit cold, but nothing that a jacket and a hat couldn t fix.
As others mentioned- probably not something youll be able to do unless you have full winter gear and specialized equipment. You may be able to do so in some of the trails near a larger town, but the mountains are pretty much out.
Just dress warm and rent some snowshoes. It ll be the middle of winter. Snowshoeing is quite fun in the mountains. Most resorts offer cross country skiing as well.
colorado? february? probably gonna be pretty cold. if you wanna go go for it! but youll need good hiking boots with grips cuz their might still be snow on the ground and dress in lots of layers!
