If it was the mid 1800s what would be the best way to get from England to America? -

Im writing a story where someone is going to america on a ship and i need more information before i can continue. Like how much it would cost and how long it would take. Where would it take off from and where it would land? Also if they would let a horse on and what that would cost. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

There were many ports and many ships each ship would set its own rates. Many would take you across for working on the ship. That is how many Irish people would get here. In fact my wife s family worked on the ship and would get paid enough to get through Ellis Island and also enough to pay for the train trip to Butte, MT. That was the late 1800 s. She told me they needed $9.40. $5 for paying to be registered in the States and Ellis Island and $4.40 for the train ride to Butte. The people with money could get cabins on a ship for under $200 and horses were allowed but not sure how much they cost. Hope this helps some.
