Either way, that route keeps you north of the San Gabriel Mtns. and away from Los Angeles traffic.The only caveat I can think of are the one-lane stretches of Hwy 18 east of Palmdale. (All it takes is one impatient driver with bad timing and you have a head-on collision on your hands.)
