You may want to register with a few good real estate agencies and put your name on college campuses looking for reputable shares. If you are willing to deal with the commute, try living in Staten Island and taking the ferry in. The North Bronx such as Morris Park, Bedford Park or Pelham park is also well-served by express buses, rail and public transportation so you may want to check this area too.
