Well, this isn t a travel question, but....That dream IS possible, but, I d say, unlikely.First of all, your friend is not studying to become a plastic surgeon if he is still in high school. One doesn t study to become a plastic surgeon until after a surgery residency, when one does the reconstructive surgery residency or fellowship, and that will be many, many years from now.You will first need to complete college, with at least a 3.5 GPA, and make a great score on the MCATs. Assuming you are both offered admission to med school [small percentage of applicants are], then you have four years of a heavy work load, intense competition, etc., and you will incur a massive amount of debt [no financial aid for med school, for the most part]. After med school comes the hard part: internship and residency, which, for surgery and anesthesiology, will last more than four years [for recon surgery it will be more like seven years]. That s years of 80-hour work weeks with on-call rotations of 24-36 hours every three or four days. By the time you re about 30 or so, you ll be ready to go into practice. By which time, your priorities may well have changed regarding where you d want to practice, etc.Yes, there are a lot of plastic surgeons on Park Avenue. Anesthesiologists, of course, are generally employed by hospitals, since that s where most surgery is done, or in clinics or surgery centers. With a lot of dedication and hard work, you can both become doctors. Good luck to you.[You might want to check the AAMC website for more information about becoming a doctor.]
That s a definite possibility.
