Haight street is just that a street. It has shops, restaurants and bars. It is gritty and there will be lots of people out on the street. Most of the other posters have given you the tourist low down. But without knowing what interests you it is nigh on impossible to give you any suggestions.
Silvermist covered about everything. I also want to include a ride on a cable car, driving across the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, driving down Lombard Street (also known as the crookedest street in the world), The Cable Car Museum, and Golden Gate Park (the S.F. Botanical Gardens and Buffalo Paddock are very nice places to visit in the park). In addition, if you go to Chinatown, which I highly recommend, visit the Fortune Cookie Factory. They have a very interesting and fun tour and you ll get some fortune cookies.
*_~ So glad that you re considering San Francisco for your vacation.Try to stay in Union Square. http://www.unionsquareshop.com/ When you arrive at the airport, take the SFO air train that goes around the airport, then youll get off when you see Bart, take Bart to Powell Station (should be about $6-9 and it takes 20 mins ) thats Union Square. http://www.bart.gov/ for schedule..I just love the weather and the diverse culture here!! Traffic can be hectic but still bearable. Public transport is great! You can always take Bart, ferries, bus, taxi or cable car etc. However, if you dont have much time or want to travel beyond the city C I think a car would help a lot.
