its funny u metion bein a british white girl my brother had a female friend come visit him and she was from the uk some lil town south of london but anyways nothing happened to her she stayed for 2 months.... as for detroit yea it is dangerous u just got to be smart when ever your in detroit like dont flash money around, make sure your car doors are locked, avoid bein out at night unless ur in downtown detroit. my advise would be to go sight seeing during the day mexicantown in southwest detroit and downtown are real safe due to high number of cops patroling the area (lots of white folks from the suburbs come to the spots so u would blend rite in)
Detroit is a beautiful city... yes it does have it s rough parts and crime it s not in all parts of the city but there is so much to do and see and crime happens in any city. There are many great theaters that you could see plays and music in if you decide to come. Sports are big too and many bars around that area and many casinos. other things to do outside of the city there is also a lot more to the state of Michigan if your looking to get out of the city there is Frankenmuth which is a great place with great food and shopping and on the way there, there is Birch Run which is an outlet mall with a ton of great stores There is the zoo which is in Royal OakThe Detroit institute of Artsthe Motown Museumthe Greenfield Village in Dearborn hope this helps
Detroit is like any major city. Just like London there are the parts that tourists go and they don t go. Just imagine a stranger who was visiting London. Would you tell them it was ok to go everywhere at any time. Most of the violence that happens in Detroit is in the neighborhoods and has nothing to do with the innocent. Like any trip you should be worried more about those who prey on tourists to cheat them out of their money. As far a race, Detroit is again much like London. There are a ton of blacks and whites who work together, are in relationships, and live in the same communities. Not to mention all of the other races that make up this major metropolitan area. Just take this model and use it for any of the cities that you visit on your travels. All major cities are the same. You just have to be smart and aware.
no people aren t always getting shot, but just like in any other city people can get shot its just more likely to happen here. There isn t really a lot of racism in Detroit. It s prominently black, but if your not it doesn t mean people are going to threaten you and stuff. There is crime more than some other cities, but I wouldn t say a lot. I feel very safe where I live and you have to remember that there are different parts, some much safer than others.
I m from Michigan and visit Detroit often. I have never been shot, nor been the victim of any other type of crime, while visiting. Not to say that it doesn t happen...just as it might happen in any other city in the world. If you visit Detroit, use common sense. Stay in the high-traffic, well-lit areas and always be aware of your surroundings.I honestly feel that Detroit is a fairly diverse and tolerant city compared to other areas of the country.
From my house you can often here gunshots and there is a lot of racism. A park near my house is known for drug deals and there was a shoot out there between a cop and a drug dealer a couple weeks ago. We have a lot of music downtown during festivals. Depending where you stay and where you go, it could be safe.
Yes, detroit is dangerous. It is murder capital of the U.S. and the murder rate is about 25X higher than the UK murder rate. About 500-600 murders occur there each year which is high considering less than a million people live in detroit. Some areas in detroit look like 3rd world countries and you will see poor people all over the streets sleeping and eating. Being a foreign tourist, people may try to take advantage of that. I woudn t walk the streets alone and being white could maybe make u target because they think u have money.stay in the uk sweety and have a cup tea.
Detroit is not as bad as a lot of people think it is. I grew up there before moving to Chicago and I feel safe there. You might not feel as safe but you should be fine. Just don t go into the hood and you will be fine. Other than the hoods in Detroit, the rest of the state and downtown Detroit is nice.
Racism is MUCH worse in most other parts of the U.S. trust me. As for crime, Detroit really isn t much different than any other city in the U.S. and, Canada. All you have to do is use common sense and, don t get involved with any crimes involving drugs (which is what is the center of most Detroit crimes).
people aint always gettin shot... there s racism but not as much as there was... there is crime but not as much as there was... drugs, violence, all that crap... but then again what big city dont got that? it would be safe for ya to come visit but stay off the streets after dusk cause you aint never know whats gonna happen next... music here is really all hip hop, rap, whatever ya wanna call it. you here a lot of biggie, 2pac, eminem (older music), cypress hill, basically older rap, but that sh!ts the best anyways. detroit changed a lil bit, we aint in the 90s no more. and trust me on all that, im from the north side of 8 mile.
Practice by going into some of the rough parts of London, or perhaps Manchester, whichever is closer to where you live. That should get you an idea of what to expect.
All major metropolitan areas have their share of crime and homelessness.
yes yes yes and finally yes, just down play the Brit thing and you ll be fine...d
What accent?
Yes there is a lot of crime and yes people do get shot in Detroit, but for racism I have seen few other places as accepting of other races as Detroit is. I have been to thirty different states. but grew up in the D. My parents still live there and they have had things stolen, no matter what time of day. As for random acts of violence, I can t say that is common. Usually violent crimes are related to drugs and/or gangs. Though I do suggest you keep car doors locked when driving in Detroit. Just to be safe. Downtown is where most tourist go and police are pretty thick there. Most of the crime happens within the surrounding Detroit, where the mass majority of the residents live. I do hope you see it and get to enjoy the rich history of Detroit.
