Does it snow in Los Angeles? -

Hello Kate,Thank you for asking your question. I have a big answer for a little question. I hope my answer gives you a good picture of Los Angeles. My mother and father were leaving Kentucky after the first of the year. They got into an argument over rather or not to bring my snowsuit. My father told my mother that it never snows in Los Angeles. My mother won the argument with my help. We arrived in Los Angeles Jan. 8, 1949.I have pictures of me playing in my snowsuit dated Jan. 11,1949. That was the last time it really, really snowed in Los Angeles.Snowfall is what makes Los Angeles one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Los Angeles sits in something like a horseshoe bowl. It is surrounded by mountains except for the ocean. Approximately every three or four years in January or February, the mountains around Los Angeles will receive large amounts of snow. You can drive along the freeways and see the snow capped mountains. Large buildings with snow capped mountains as the backdrop. It is something to see.Snowfall also makes Los Angeles one of the most unusual cities in the world. You can go skiing in the mountains. After skiing, you can drive an hour or so and go swimming in the ocean in eighty (80) degree temperatures. These are the reasons Los Angeles is one of the greatest cities in the world. Sometimes the snow will close the main roads out of Los Angeles. The roads leading to San Francisco or Las Vegas will close for hours or even (two and three days) days. For your own info: I do a lot of camping and backpacking in the High Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Sierras are located north of Los Angeles. Los Angeles does not receive very much rain. If it were not for the snowfall in the Sierras, Los Angeles would not be here. It would be a tiny town. Los Angeles receives most of its water (pumped in) from the snow pack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. If you are ever on Jeopardy: The snow in the Mighty High Sierra Nevada Mountains is the heaviest snow in the world. Normal snow is 10:1. Meaning, you will receive one (1) inch of water per ten (10) inches of snow. High Sierra Nevada snow is 5:1. The snow in the High Sierra Nevada Mountains is known throughout the world as Sierra Cement .Nice talking to you. Have a great day, from Los Angeles.

Very rarely, but it has happened. The last time was on January 22, 1962. For all practical purposes the general answer would be no . We do get snow (quite a bit), in our mountains, and we do have a ski season here in Southern California. But in Downtown, Los Angeles, and Greater Los Angeles, it s not something to be expected on a regular basis.

There s been a few times when I ve seen extremely heavy hail in the city but playing in that is like throwing ice cubes at each other... may as well throw rocks. The mountains get snow but don t expect anything but rain and terrible drivers in and around downtown los angeles around winter time.. (not that we really have much of a winter.)

It has on a couple of occasions in the last century. but it s not normal at all. maybe once every few years if it is really cold, there might be a small section of LA that get s a light blanket of snow. this is so cal, the temp never really goes below freezing.

Technically, yes. The last time was 1949. But for all intents and purposes, no. Snow is great to look at on the mountains, but it s no fun if you have to shovel it or drive in it. I was born in LA, and I m not going to move anywhere it snows.

Most snow falls above the 3000ft level, it will hail in LA/OC/Riverside/San Berdo on occasion. And frost is common place in town. Snow is a rarity, and disappears in short a time.

Snowfall is extremely rare in the city basin, but the mountains within city limits typically receive snowfall every winter. The greatest snowfall recorded in downtown Los Angeles was 2 inches (5.08 cm) in 1932.

sometimes but its more easy to find in little towns on the north of californiagood luck sweetie:D

In Los Angeles, No. But it does snow in the mountains that are somewhat local to LA.

In certain areas yes but most no (mainly snows in the mountains)

It does in other parts of LA, but in downtown, no.

I lived there for years and it never did ever. Not even ice

I ve never heard about snow in LA. Ever in my life!
